BATES KNOCKS OFF NO. 19 NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE, 1-0, ON PENALTY STROKES

HENNIKER, N.H. -- The Bates College field hockey team (7-3) defeated nationally-ranked New England College (11-3, No. 19 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll) on penalty strokes today, 1-0.

In a back-and-forth game during regulation play, junior goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) kept the Bobcats alive with several key saves. In the first half she twice deflected NEC penalty corners while making nine second-half stops, including a stopping two Pilgrim breakaways from 25 yards out. Ficks made 14 saves overall in the winning effort, while NEC keeper Kristen Milroy made 10.

After 100 minutes of play on the field, Ficks again came up big, stopping four of five penalty strokes, while the Bobcats converted twice. Sophomore Ginny Hurley (Revere, Mass.) scored one stroke on a controversial call. On her first attempt, Hurley hit the post, but the referee whistled New England College keeper Milroy for moving before the ball was hit. Hurley then converted her second chance, while junior Nicole St. Jean (Kensington, N.H.) tallied the game-winner.
