LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bowdoin College field hockey team scored two goals just over a minute apart late in the first half and withstood a furious last-minute rally to capture the CBB conference opener against host Bates College, 2-1.

After the Bobcats came out and spent much of the first 10 minutes of the game in the Bowdoin half of the field, the Polar Bears made the most of their opportunities. Bowdoin took the lead on a tally by senior Heather Hawes (Westport, Mass.), whose shot off a penalty corner found its way through a crowd and past Bates junior goalkeeper Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) with 7:05 left in the half. Classmate Amanda Newton (Hallowell, Maine) scored what proved to be the game-winner one minute, three seconds later, on a similar goal, taking advantage of the screens in front of Ficks after a penalty corner.

Ficks, who made 16 saves, including throwing her body at Hawes as she attacked on a breakaway, kept the Bobcats within striking distance until sophomore Kara Conceison (Watertown, Mass.) tied the contest with just over four minutes left on the clock. Conceison converted a rebound on a penalty corner as the Bobcats stepped up pressure in the final five minutes, but Bates was unable to put any further shots on goal.

Bates takes on defending national champion Middlebury in Vermont on Saturday at 1 p.m.
