LATE GOAL LIFTS BOWDOIN PAST BATES, 1-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior midfielder Jackie Templeton (Middlebury, Conn.) scored with just 4:44 left in regulation as the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears (5-0, 3-0 NESCAC) spoiled the home opener for the Bates College Bobcats (0-4, 0-2 NESCAC).

The Bobcats and Polar Bears played even through the first 65 minutes of play. Bowdoin kept offensive pressure on for much of the first half, but Bates held a 6-5 shot advantage at the break. Bowdoin had a chance to get on the board first on a penalty stroke with 16:28 left in regulation, but Bates goalkeeper Lindsay Gary (Del Mar, Calif.) forced Bowdoin junior Leah McClure (Rothesay, N.B.) to shoot the ball wide right.

Bowdoin broke the deadlock late in the game when Templeton blasted a shot through a crowd on a broken penalty corner. Bates had one last opportunity to tie the game on a three-on-two break in the final 30 seconds, but sophomore reserve Samara Khalique (West Hartford, Conn.) just missed deflecting home a rebound off of Bowdoin goalkeeper Gillian McDonald (Hudson, Quebec). Hudson had nine saves in the win, while Gary made 12 stops in the losing effort.
