BATES OPENS ASTROTURF FIELD WITH 3-1 WIN OVER SOUTHERN MAINE
LEWISTON, Maine-- The Bates College field hockey team handled the University of Southern Maine, 3-1, in the inaugural game on the new John Bertram AstroTurf Field.
For the second time in as many games for the Bobcats (2-0), sophomore forward Johie Farrar (W. Paris, Maine) opened the scoring early. After a penalty corner attempt was cleared by Southern Maine but kept in the offensive zone by the Bobcats, Farrar lifted a feed from classmate Kat Bennett (Yarmouth, Maine) high over the glove of USM goalkeeper Jessie Superchi (Hampton, N.H.) at the 24:55 mark of the first half.
Neither team was able to convert for the rest of the first half and much of the second as they adjusted to the new AstroTurf surface. Bates looked to put the game away on a goal by rookie Andrea Noyes (Avon, Conn.) with just under six minutes remaining. The Huskies (3-3) crept closer when junior Laura Jurkowski (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) poked the ball past Bates goalkeeper Peg Ficks (Washington, Conn.) on their lone penalty corner of the second half with 2:47 on the clock. The Bobcats iced the game on a penalty corner of their own with 1:07 left as rookie Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) redirected a hit from senior Nicole St. Jean (Kensington, N.H.).
Ficks had four saves in the victory, while Superchi made 13 stops in the losing effort. Bates plays host to 1999 NCAA runner-up and NESCAC rival Amherst on Saturday, while USM opens Little East play against Westfield State.
