BATES FALLS TO TUFTS IN ECAC QUARTERFINALS ON PENALTY STROKES

(Taken from a Tufts University press release)

MEDFORD, Mass. -- After 100 scoreless minutes of regulation and overtime play, Tufts senior co-captain Colette Gaudet (Redding, Conn.) lofted a shot into the top right corner of the net for the only goal of the penalty strokes round to lift the Jumbos to victory over Bates College in the ECAC New England Division III Field Hockey quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.

Tufts (10-7) shot first in the penalty strokes round. Both teams missed their first three shots. Gaudet scored on the Jumbos' fourth shot. Bates (7-8) misfired on its fourth shot and Tufts senior keeper Dena Sloan (Millburn, N.J.) stopped the fifth at her feet to get the win.

Both teams had numerous scoring chances during regulation and overtime. Tufts sophomore Ursala Stahl (Longmeadow, Mass.) was able to clear a ball lying in front of an open Jumbo net with 20 minutes to go in the second half. Bates senior captain Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.), named an All-NESCAC selection earlier in the day, was outstanding in the goal cage, stopping several Tufts break-aways and finishing with 20 saves. Sloan had eight saves for the Jumbos.
