PRICE HELPS BATES STRIKE QUICKLY FOR 2-1 WIN OVER TUFTS

(Taken from a Tufts University press release)

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Sophomore Julia Price (Mansfield, Mass.) set up one Bates goal and scored another less than three minutes later early in the second half to help the visiting Bates College Bobcats to a 2-1 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey action on Sunday afternoon.

Tufts took an early 1-0 lead with 22:27 on the clock in the first half when senior co-captain Colette Gaudet (Redding, Conn.) converted a pass from junior Christina Orf (Lexington, Mass.). Neither team had many scoring opportunities in the first 35 minutes with a combined total of six shots between the teams.

Bates came charging out of the half, with junior midfielder Sarah Weatherbee (Walpole, Mass.) scoring off a pass from Price at 30:48. Then at 28:03 Price scored her second goal of the season to give Bates the eventual game-winner.

In this tight series that has seen each team win three games out of the last six, this game was no different. The Bobcats (2-3 NESCAC, 5-3 overall) ended Tufts' (2-2 NESCAC, 4-3 overall) four-game winning streak and kept themselves alive in the hunt for a berth into the NESCAC post-season tournament.

Senior Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) had seven saves to earn the win in the Bates goal. Sophomore Lauren Rufino (Pleasantville, N.Y.), making her second start of the season, had four saves for Tufts.
