BATES BLANKS NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE IN SEASON OPENER, 3-0

LEWISTON, Maine-- The Bates College field hockey team (1-0) opened its 2000 season in fine fashion today, defeating New England College (2-1), 3-0, in Lewiston today.

The Bobcats scored first 15 minutes into the contest when sophomore forward Johie Farrar (W. Paris, Maine) broke past a pair of New England College defenders and fired a shot just to the left of Pilgrim goalie Krista Milroy (W. Springfield, Mass.). The Bobcats doubled the lead with just under six minutes remaining in the first half when first-year midfielder Annie Schauer (Louisville, Ky.) converted a penalty corner feed from sophomore Julia Price (Mansfield, Mass.). Rookie forward Lori Jessup (Hatboro, Pa.) closed out the scoring in the second half when she knocked the ball past Milroy on a scramble in front of the NEC net.

Bates goalkeeper Peg Ficks (Washington, Conn.) made seven saves in recording her 13th career shutout. The entire Bobcat defense was impressive in shutting out a team that had outscored its opponents 11-1 in the previous two games. Milroy had 14 saves in the losing effort.

The Bobcats will inaugurate their new AstroTurf field next to John Bertram Hall in their next contest on Thursday against Southern Maine.
