COLBY DROPS BATES, 4-2, IN CBB FIELD HOCKEY CONTEST LEWISTON, Maine -- The Colby College field hockey team (6-7, 2-6 NESCAC) scored three of its four goals directly off of penalty corners, giving the White Mules a 4-2 victory over the host Bates College Bobcats (7-6, 2-6 NESCAC) in the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) series. Colby got on the board first on a goal by junior forward Lizzy Brandt (Concord, N.H.) from junior Marcia Ingraham (Georgetown, Mass.) just over seven minutes into the game. Bates' Nicole St. Jean (Exeter, N.H.) answered a minute and a half later with a blast of her own from the top of the circle on a penalty corner. Colby foward Becca Bruce (Exeter, N.H.) scored with just under 20 minutes remaining, giving the Mules a 2-1 lead when she rebounded a shot taken by rookie Sari Gilbert (Marblehead, Mass.). The eventual game-winning goal came with just one second remaining in the first half on a set penalty corner shot by Colby sophomore Jenn Brenneman (Denver, Colo.). Bates got back to within one at 3-2 when junior Leslie Moser (Adamant, Vt.) found sophomore forward Johie Farrar (W. Paris, Maine) open with 30 minutes left in regulation. Farrar had a chance at an equalizer at the 16 minute mark, but hit the post. Colby regained some breathing room on Ingraham's blast from just inside the circle with under five minutes to go, putting the Mules up, 4-2. Bates goalies Peggy Ficks (Washington, Conn.) and Lindsay Gary (San Diego, Cal.) combined for 15 saves in the losing effort, while Colby's Jane Stevens (Chevy Chase, Md.) had 13 stops to gain the victory. The Bobcats wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Connecticut College, while the Mules will face NESCAC leader Bowdoin in Brunswick for a shot at the CBB title.
