WOMEN'S VARSITY EIGHTS REMAINS UNDEFEATED AGAINST COLLEGE BOATS

HOOKSET, N.H. -- Competing in the New Hampshire Championships on the Merrimac River in against 15 colleges and universities, the Bates rowers had their strongest showing ever under first-year head coach Richard Ruggieri. The womens varsity 8+ remain undefeated against all collegiate programs, registering wins over New England opponents New Hampshire, Colby, Middlebury and Simmons to place second overall. The mens varsity 8+ had its highest finish ever, taking fourth place (third among college programs). In all, the Bobcats placed eight of their 10 boats among the top five in their race. The results include the top men's varsity 4+, a crew made up of alumni.

"Our four second-place finishes show just how deep the program here is," Ruggieri said. "The job that [assistants] Jon Miller [Bates Class of 1997] and Sandra Dubarry have done producing such fine results with the novices is impressive. Our novices had not rowed before coming to Bates, while many of the other novice boats had."

The Bobcats next take to the water on Sat., Oct. 23, at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Cambridge, Mass. The men's varsity eight-plus-cox and the women's second varsity eight-plus will compete in the Club Division.
