Textile River Regatta LOWELL, Mass. - In their first regatta of the season of the 2001-02 season, Bates rowng had an outstnading performance at the The Textile River Regatta. With over 2,500 competitors, the race has become a major event in US College Rowing. Over the last month, the team has been working to focus exclusively on technique and effective rowing, and the performance in Lowell showed the team's raw speed and talent. In a deep field, Bates' varsity men's 8+ managed to bring home some hardware. Early in the day they raced many of their peer institutions, such as Trinity, Colby, and Wesleyan along with Division I crews to a first-place finish in the Men's Club 8+ event. In the Open Men's 8+ a division consisting of crews at the pre-elite level the Bobcats took an impressive third-place finish. The varsity women's team, in a field that is typically tight across the board, finished in the top one-third, showing their promise for this season. Last year the varsity women's program graduated three key team members. "I see this next month as an opportunity to develop a young group of athletes both physically and technically," commented Bates head coach Andrew Carter. "The crew has tested the waters, so to speak, and their task now is to blend their intensity and race savvy with boat moving skills that serve them well next month at the Head-of-the-Charles in Boston."
