Head of the Charles
Cambridge, Mass.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Bates rowing took part in the most prestigious regatta of the fall, the Head of the Charles, Oct. 20-21. Four Bates boats were selected in the lottery to participate this year.

The most successful performers this year were the men's eight-plus-coxswain, who finished in 19th place in the Club race with a time of 16:02.5, just 44 seconds off the pace of the winners from Harvard. The Bobcats' finish earned them a slot in the 2002 Head of the Charles. They were ninth among collegiate boats in the race and fifth among Division III competitors, beating NESCAC foes from Wesleyan and Colby.

The women's eight-plus boat came in 29th of 58 entries, one of their strongest performances of the season. The Bobcats were second among NESCAC teams and seventh among Division III boats with a time of 18:29.5.

Bates also entered their men's and and women's four-plus coxswain boats. The women were 48th of 58 racers and the men were 50th of 70 participants.
