Bates 5-14, Maine-Presque Isle 3-0

Bates College senior leftfielder Mike Voelker (Coventry, R.I.) went five for seven with four home runs and triple in a doubleheader as the Bobcats swept Maine-Presque Isle, 5-3 and 14-0, at Leahey Field. Voelker had nine RBI in the two games. He was two for four in the opener with a triple and his first home run of the season. In the second game, Voelker became the fourth player in school history to hit three home runs in a game, joining Jim Callilo, Kevin Murphy '77 and Chris Hickey '88. The game was called after five innings because of the 12-run rule. The Bobcats got strong pitching performances from senior Chris Snow (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the opener (7 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 10 K, 4 BB) and sophomore Dave Sprague (Southern Pines, N.C.) in the second game (5 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 5 K, 3 BB). Also hitting home runs in he second game were sophomore rightfielder Jason Coulie (Manchester, N.H.) and sophomore catcher Frost Hubbard (East Walpole, Mass.). The Bobcats' six home runs today is just two shy of the eight they hit last season. Their 12 HR this season marks the first time they have hit double figures since 1992.
