TUFTS BASEBALL SWEEPS BATES IN NESCAC OPENER, 13-5 AND 7-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- In the conference openers for both teams, New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rivals Tufts University (7-7) swept a doubleheader from the Bates College Bobcats (0-9), 13-5 and 7-0.

In the opener, the Jumbos were paced by senior 3B John Flack (Berkley Heights, N.J.), who went 5-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, as eight of Tufts' nine starters had at least one hit and one run scored. Bates was led by sophomore outfielder Ben Bines (Lexington, Mass.), who hit his first home run of the season in the seventh inning.

In the second game, Tufts junior pitcher Zack Brown (Melrose, Mass.) hurled a complete-game shutout, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out two in seven innings. First-year Dan Callahan (Medfield, Mass.) went 3-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored at the plate.
