MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Middlebury College Panthers (16-10) swept a doubleheader from the visiting Bates College Bobcats (5-17) by holding the Bates bats in check, allowing just five hits in 13 innings of work. Middlebury won game one, 16-1, in a contest shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule. The Panthers scored six runs in the bottom of the first off starter James Hanley (Pawtucket, R.I.) and sent 15 batters to the plate in a 10-run fourth inning. In game two, the Bobcats got on the board first with senior 3B Scott McAuliffe's (Concord, N.H.) two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Middlebury chipped away, scoring in every inning from the second on to take a 5-2 lead into the top of the sixth. The Bobcats scored five unearned runs in that inning without benefit of a base hit, with the Panthers committing three errors. The Bobcats clung to a 7-6 lead with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a timely RBI double by Middlebury's Matt Blake, who barely missed his second home run of the game. Another RBI double by the Panther's Jeff Sengle won the contest off Bates closer Jason Coulie (Manchester, N.H.) in the bottom of the eighth inning.
