Greensboro 10, Bates 7 GREENSBORO RALLY DENIES BOBCATS FIRST WIN, 10-7 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Bates College baseball team (0-3) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three innings, but could not hold on, as 1998 NCAA tournament participant Greensboro College (2-0) scored six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take the 10-7 decision. The Bobcats got their best starting pitching perforamance of the season so far, as sophomore Andy Stanton (Great Bend, Pa.) allowed just four hits and three earned runs in six innings. Senior tri-captain Shirl Penney (Eastport, Maine) helped Bates jump out quickly, driving in one run and scoring another in the first, and adding a two-run triple in the second, staking Bates to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Greensboro took advantage of the Bobcats' pitching inexperience, however, scoring six runs in the seventh and eighth inning to turn a 7-4 deficit into the 10-7 Pride win. Bates was also hurt by runners left on base, stranding 12 overall, including leaving the bases loaded three times. Besides Penney's three-RBI day, the Bobcats got multi-hit games from senior tri-captain Scott McAuliffe (Concord, N.H.), who was 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, sophomore second baseman Pat Collins (Walpole, Mass.), who was 2-5 with a double and two runs scored, and sophomore leftfielder Ben Bines (Lexington, Mass.), who was 2-5. The Bobcats wrap up their southern swing tomorrow against Eastern Mennonite College.
