BATES AND TRINITY SPLIT NESCAC EAST TWINBILL

HARTFORD, Conn. — The Bates College baseball team bounced back after Trinity College tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in the first game today to hand the NESCAC East leaders and No. 4 team in New England their first conference loss of the season in the night cap, 13-5.

Trinity (14-4, 5-1 NESCAC East) rode junior hurler Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) to the 14-0 victory in the first game. Bayliss struck out 14 Bobcats in the Bantam's first no-no since Bayliss' older brother Jarrett threw one in 1997. Senior right fielder Mark Mahoney (Newtown, Mass.) provided the scoring punch for Trinity, belting his third home run of the season.

In the second game, the Bobcats took advantage of Maine-like weather, as the nine- inning contest saw low temperatures and snow flurries. Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning, Bates exploded for six runs, highlighed by a three-run home run from senior RF John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.), one of his three hits on the day. Sophomore Drew McKenna (Middleboro, Mass.) also went deep for the Bobcats. Junior hurler Billy Karz (Van Nuys, Cal.) picked up his second win of the week in relief, keeping the Bantams in check between the fifth and ninth innings. Trinity junior 2B Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) belted his sixth homer of the year for the Bantams.
