Bates 7, Northwood Univ. 7
at West Palm Beach, Fla.

W. PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Bates College baseball team had its third win of the season plucked away today, as the Bobcats took a lead on host and NAIA member Northwood University in the top of the 11th inning, only to have the game called because of darkness with none out in the bottom of the frame.

The Bobcats (2-0-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, loading the bases with none out. One run scored on a passed ball, while sophomore leadoff hitter Rob Maguire (Wayland, Mass.) drove in the other two runners with a single. The Seahawks came back with two runs off starter Shane Delaney (Needham, Mass.) in the fourth inning on a single, a triple and an error, but Bates answered in on an RBI groundout in the fifth by sophomore SS Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.).

Northwood evened the game with two runs in the sixth off sophomore Chris Gwozdz (Cheshire, Mass.), but rookie Mike Kinsman (Yarmouth, Maine) stopped the rally. Senior C Ben Donaldson (Lamoine, Maine) got Bates the lead back with a bases-loaded walk in the seventh and sophomore 1B Drew McKenna (Middleboro, Mass.) gave the Bobcats a 7-4 cushion with a two-run double one batter later. The Seahawks scored an unearned run in the seventh and tied the game on a two-run home run in the eighth. Neither team could advance baserunners in the ninth and 10th innings, but the Bobcats scored twice with benefit of five walks and a single in the top of the 11th before the game was called due to darkness.
