NICHOLS BLANKS BATES, 5-0

DUDLEY, Mass. — Nichols College rookie Chris Demers (Blackstone, Mass.) threw a complete-game three-hit shutout today as the Bison defeated visiting Bates College, 5-0.

Nichols (8-5) got all the runs they would need in the first inning on an RBI double by sophomore RF Alan Canale (Weymouth, Mass.), who finished 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored. The Bison tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning on five straight singles off Bates senior starter Shane Delaney (Needham, Mass.) and another in the eighth against sophomore Shawn Kingman (Cummaquid, Mass.). Demers did the rest, striking out nine and walking two.

Bobcat senior LF Jason Pinkham (Milbridge, Maine), sophomore 2B Owen Miehe (Glen Rock, N.J.) and sophomore 1B Drew McKenna (Middleboro, Mass.) had hits for Bates (5-8-1). Sophomore Matt Peterson (Marblehead, Mass.) had an excellent game behind the plate, throwing out four of six attempted base stealers.
