BATES SWEEPS LYNDON STATE IN SPRING OPENER

FT. PIERCE, Fla. — The Bates College baseball team kicked off the spring season in fine fashion on their training trip to Fort Pierce, Fla, as the Bobcats defeated Lyndon (Vt.) State College twice, 11-7 in the opener and 12-2 in the nightcap.

The Bobcats (2-0) jumped out in front early in game one, scoring five times in the first inning. Sophomore SS Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.) belted a two-run double to open the scoring. Classmate Jeff Shouldice (Pittsfield, Mass.) knocked him home three batters later and sophomore 1B Drew McKenna (Middleboro, Mass.) belted his third career home run, a two-run shot that put the Bobcats up 5-0. Seniors RF John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.) and C Ben Donaldson(Lamoine, Maine) each picked their first RBI of the season in the three-run second and Bates went up 10-0 with two unearned runs in the third, putting the Bobcats ahead 10-1. Starting pitcher junior Billy Karz (Van Nuys, Cal.) and senior Ben Megrian (Newton, Mass.) held the Hornets to just five hits and three runs in the four innings. Megrian (1-0) picked up the win as the Bobcats held on, 11-7, after Lyndon State battled back. The Hornets scored six times in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but sophomore Adam Waite (Lewiston, Maine) retired the side in order in the seventh.

In the second game, Bates starter, junior Ryan Weaver(Canton, Ohio) gave up a two-run home run to the third batter of the game, but Lyndon State managed just four hits after that. Weaver went three innings, Waite pitched the fourth and fifth to pick up the victory and rookie John Furbush (So. Portland, Maine) struck out the side on 11 pitches in the sixth as the Bobcats cruised to a 12-2 victory. Bates scored six runs in the fifth inning with benefit of just two hits, one of which was a bases-loaded triple by sophomore CF Rob Maguire (Wayland, Mass.). McKenna also picked up three RBI, including a two-run single in the first inning.
