WORCESTER STATE SWEEPS BATES IN BOBCATS' NORTHERN OPENER

SANDWICH, Mass. — The Bates College baseball team dropped its first two games in New England today, falling to Worcester State College 17-8 and 17-2 in a pair of contests played on a neutral field at Sandwich, Mass.

In game one, the Bobcats had their biggest offensive output of the season to date, scoring eight runs and rapping out 11 hits, including seven extra base hits. Trailing 7-4 after four innings, Bates grabbed the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth. The big blows in the inning were a two-run single by rookie third baseman Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.) and an RBI triple by junior left fielder Jason Pinkham (Milbridge, Maine). Worcester State put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Lancers sent 13 men to the plate, scoring 10 runs to take the 17-8 win. Junior designated hitter John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.) had three hits in the contest, including a pair of doubles.

Worcester State held the momentum from the sixth inning of game one into game two, jumping out to an 8-0 lead after two innings and adding another big inning in the fifth. The Bates bats were quieted in the game, as the Bobcats scratched out two runs on three hits. Junior catcher Ben Donaldson (Lamoine, Maine) and rookie first baseman Drew McKenna (Middleboro, Mass.) had the Bobcats' RBI, with McKenna rapping a double in the seventh inning.
