Game 1: Williams 11, Bates 7 NO. 23 WILLIAMS SWEEPS BATES LEWISTON, Maine The visiting Williams College Ephs (28-3), ranked No. 23 in the nation in the most recent ABCA Division III poll, pounded out 34 hits in two games en route to a doubleheader sweep of the host Bates College Bobcats (2-27), 11-7 in game one and 16-3 in game two. After Williams opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning of game one, Bates scored four in the second to take the lead. The big blows in the inning were a two-run single by first-year CF Rob Maguire (Wayland, Mass.) and RBI singles from classmates Jeff Shouldice (Pittsfield, Mass.) And Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.) Williams tied the game with two unearned runs in the top of the third and a solo home run by sophomore 2B Robert Coppola (Orange, Conn.) in the fourth. The Ephs took the lead in the fifth when sophomore 3B Austin Lehn (Maplewood, N.J.) scored on a double play and and RBI double by junior DH Mark Scialabba (Queensbury, N.Y.). The Bobcats tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch and an senior SS Christian Galligher's (Mont Vernon, N.H.) RBI single, but Williams put the game away with three runs in the sixth, with senior C Tim Albrecht's (Braintree, Mass.) two-run home run providing the ultimate margin of victory. Williams rookie Ryan Paylor (Braintree, Mass.) picked up his fifth win, while Bates' Billy Karz (Van Nuys, Cal.) suffered the loss. Williams jumped out early in game two, opening a 9-0 lead after three innings before Bates got on the board. The Ephs were paced by a 5-6 performance by rookie 1B Jabe Bergeron (Keene, NH), who had 3 RBI, two runs scored and his sixth home run of the season in the second inning. Coppola added a 2-4 performance and matched Bergeron's three RBI, while junior SS Will Casolo (Stamford, Conn.) went 3-6 with two RBI and two runs scored out of the leadoff slot. Bates was paced by Merriman, who went 3-4 with a pair of RBI doubles. Senior Matt Pound (Santa Fe, N.M.) hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning. Williams sophomore Ben Hamm (Java Center, NY) scattered nine hits over six innings for the win, while Bates' Ryan Weaver (Canton, Ohio) took the loss.
