BOBCATS SPLIT WITH THOMAS, SNAP LOSING SKID

BEVERLY, Mass. — The Bates College baseball team got some outstanding pitching from rookie Ben Megrian (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Weaver (Canton, Ohio) as the Bobcats split a doubleheader with Thomas College. Bates dropped the first game, 2-1, and won the nightcap, 1-0, in a contest that was shortened to five innings because of time constraints.

In game one, Megrian scattered four hits over seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out six. Bates scored a run on an RBI single in the third inning by junior C Ben Donaldson (Lamoine, Maine). Trailing 2-1 entering the seventh inning, the Bobcats loaded the bases with one out, but could not push the tying run across the plate.

Weaver held the Terriers hitless over the first four innings of the second game, allowing just two baserunners, one on a hit batter and another on an error that was quickly erased on a 3-6-1 double play. The Bobcats scored in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by junior leftfielder Justin Pats (Baldwin, Md.) that scored senior SS Christian Galligher (Mont Vernon, N.H.). Weaver allowed two hits in the top of the fifth, but one was erased on a 6-4-3 twin killing.
