Walsh four-hitter wraps season on high note

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College senior lefty Kevin Walsh (Wakefield, Mass.) hurled a four-hitter for his seventh career complete game as the host Bobcats (3-28) split a non-conference baseball doubleheader with the visiting Endicott College Power Gulls (18-17). Endicott took the opener, 9-1, while Bates won the nightcap, 3-2.

Bates ended its season on a high note with Walsh's fine performance on the hill. Bates jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on four straight hits. Senior 1B Matt Pound (Santa Fe, N.M.) stroked a two-run double with one out and scored two batters later on an RBI single by junior DH John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.). Walsh made that stand up by allowing just one hit per inning in the second through the fifth. Two Endicott sacrifice flies provided the Power Gulls' runs in the third and fourth innings. Rookie pitcher Craig Baskis (Leominster, Mass.) did a good job shutting the Bobcats down after the first, allowing just one more hit in five innings of work.

In game one, Endicott scored one run in the first and took advantage of two Bates errors in the second to open up a 5-0 margin and the Power Gulls never looked back. Junior C Bryan Caruso (Northfield, N.H.) led the way with two doubles and two RBI, rookie 3B Matt Plante (No. Bennington, Vt.) scored a pair of runs. Junior hurler Gavin McDonough (Lexington, Mass.) went the distance, scattering seven hits and striking out six for the Power Gull. Bates was led by Pound's 3-3 performance, while junior Jason Pinkham (Millbridge, Maine) drove in Merriman in the seventh for Bates' lone run. Rookie Ben Megrian (Newton, Mass.) suffered the loss.
