VANDERSEA GETS FIRST CAREER WIN AS BOBCATS SPLIT WITH UMPI

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College baseball team picked up the first collegiate head coaching win for Craig Vandersea as the Bobcats split a double-header with the University of Maine-Presque Isle. Bates (1-7) won the opener, 3-2, while the Owls took the nightcap, 9-6.

In the opener, Bates senior James Hanley (Pawtucket, R.I.) breezed through the first five innings allowing just one hit. The Bobcats opened the scoring in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by junior RF Ben Bines (Lexington, Mass.) who drove home 2B Pat Collins (Walpole, Mass.) one pitch after Collins stole second. UMPI got to Hanley with two away in the sixth, putting men on second and third on a double by senior 3B Noel Santiago (Lawrence, Mass.). The Owls scored when sophomore RF Matt MacDonald (Pictou, Nova Scotia) hit a routine grounder to short that was booted, allowing both runs to score. Bates responded in the bottom of the inning, as junior 1B Matt Pound (Santa Fe, N.M.) drove home Bines and senior CF Jason Coulie (Manchester, N.H.) with a double. Sophomore Shane Delaney (Needham, Mass.) shut the door, retiring four of the five batters he faced in the sixth and seventh for the win.

In game two, the Owls got on Bates starter Kevin Walsh (Wakefield, Mass.) early, scoring twice in the top of the first and once in the third on a double-steal of home by Santiago. The Bobcats answered in the bottom of the third on a two-run triple by Pound, followed by an RBI single from sophomore DH Ben Donaldson (Lamoine, Maine). UMPI took advantage of Bates miscues in the fourth, loading the bases on an error and two walks before clearing them on a triple by sophomore CF Tony Garreans (Miami, Fla.) who scored one batter later to give UMPI a 7-4 lead. Bates cut to within one on a passed ball and a balk in the fourth, but could not get any closer. Presque Isle added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to clinch the win for reliever Matthew Cox (Stockton Springs, Maine), as Santiago picked up the save.
