ST JOE'S COMPLETES SEASON SWEEP OF BATES, 5-2 AND 8-5

Standish, Maine - right-hander J.P. Pyne (Milford, Mass.) pitched two complete innings, striking out two and earning two saves, as Saint Joseph's College (26-12) swept Bates College (3-18) in a baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Ward Field, winning the first game 5-2 and the nightcap, 8-5.

In the first game, the Monks grabbed a 3-1 lead in the home half of the second inning on two hits. Junior Adam Newell (Locke Mills, Maine) drove in the first run of the inning on a double to deep right field. Rookie Nick Mirabello (Arlington, Mass.) knocked in the next run on a ground ball to second base, giving the Monks all the runs they would need.

Bates pitcher James Hanley (Pawtucket, RI) pitched a complete game and fell to 0-2 on the season. The Bobcats got RBI from junior 1B Matt Pound (Santa Fe, N.M.) and sophomore 3B John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.). Freshman Patrick Dugan (Sandwich, Mass.) pitched six innings, scattering six hits and striking out three, to earn his first win of the season for the Monks.

In the second game, Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on one hit and three Bates errors. Senior Dave Quintal (Bourne, Mass.) singled to shallow center field for the only hit of the inning.

Bates rallied in the top of the second inning to score three runs on three hits and an error to cut the lead to 4-3. Senior Frost Hubbard (E. Walpole, Mass.) drove in the only earned run of the inning on a single to right field.

The Monks posted four more runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits to take a 8-3 lead. Sophomore Jim Becvar (Lewiston, Maine) drove in the first two runs on a single to right field and Mirabello plated the final two on a double to the right.

Junior Andy Stanton (Great Bend, Pa.) pitched 4.2 innings for Bates and was tagged with his second loss of the season. Hubbard ended the game 2-2 with an RBI and a double, while senior CF Jason Coulie (Manchester, N.H.) was 2-4 with a triple, a stolen base and an RBI. Sophomore Charlie Buker (West Paris, Maine) pitched six complete innings, before allowing Pyne to finish the day for the Monks. Buker scattered seven hits and struck out six to run his record to 3-1 on the season.
