BATES BASEBALL DROPS A PAIR AT MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team traveled to Cambridge, Mass. this past weekend to face the Engineers of MIT. The Bobcats (0-4) lost both games of the double-header.

In the first game, MIT jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning. Senior co-captain Drew Blicharz (Rutland, Vt.) walked the second batter and hit the third. An Engineer single brought both runners home, giving MIT a 2-0 lead that they would never relinquish. The Bobcats scored their lone run of the game in the top of the second inning. Junior second-baseman Pat Collins (Walpole, Mass.), lined a double into left field with two outs, and first-year Billy Karz (Van Nuys, Calif.) drove him home with a single. Bates held the MIT offense in check until the bottom of the fourth, when the Engineers capitalized off Bobcat mistakes to score twice. MIT scored two runs in each of the following innings while holding Bates scoreless to earn the 8-1 victory.

In the second game, the Bobcats stayed close courtesy of a strong pitching performance from junior left-hander Kevin Walsh (Wakefield, Mass.). MIT scored two runs in the third inning on four-straight singles. The Engineers scored three more runs in the fourth with a bases-loaded triple.

The Bobcat offense managed just two runs in the first six innings. Trailing 5-2 with two out in the top of the seventh inning, Blicharz hit a solo home-run to bring Bates to within two runs. The Bobcats rally was stifled, however, and MIT earned their second win of the day, 5-3. Walsh pitched a complete game, giving up five runs on ten hits, while striking out two. The Bobcats were playing without the services of junior leftfielder Ben Bines (Lexington, Mass.), who was out with illness.

Bates will next travel to Tufts University for a double-header on April 1. The Bobcats will play their home-opener at noon on April 2, when Maine-Presque Isle makes the trip south to Lewiston for a double-header at Leahy Field.
