Game 1: Colby 8, Bates 7 (9 innings)
Game 2: Bates 11, Colby 3
at Lewiston, Maine

LEWISTON, Maine -- Meeting for the second time in five days, the Bates and Colby baseball teams split a doubleheader for the second time. Colby (12-17) won the opener, 8-7 in nine innings. Bates (6-19) came back to take the nightcap, 11-3, in a contest shortened to six innings because of darkness.

In the opener, Colby scored at least one run in each inning between the second and sixth, taking a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Bates scored one in the sixth and four in the seventh, evening the game on a booted ground ball hit by senior 3B James Hanley (Pawtucket, R.I.). The White Mules scored the winning run with two outs in the top of the ninth on a double by rookie catcher Anthony DiSotto (Jay, Maine), followed by a triple from first-year SS Kevin Brunelle (Augusta, Maine).

Bates decided Game Two in the fifth inning, when the Bobcats sent 15 men to the plate. Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, 11 straight Bobcats reached base safely before Colby made an out. Bates had seven hits in the inning and were helped by three White Mule errors. Sophomore SS Ben Donaldson (Lamoine, Maine), junior RF Ben Bines (Lexington, Mass.) and Hanley each had RBI doubles in the frame. Bates rookie Billy Karz (Van Nuys, Calif.) retired five of the six batters he faced for his first collegiate win. The Bates outburst spoiled the seventh home run of the season for junior 2B Andy Tripp (Saco, Maine), a solo shot that led off the fourth inning.
