BOWDOIN'S PORTER SHUTS DOWN BATES IN CBB BASEBALL ACTION

LEWISTON, Maine Ð Bowdoin College rookie pitcher Jared Porter (Duxbury, Mass.), making his first career start, held the host Bates College Bobcats (1-12, 0-3 Colby-Bates-Bowdoin series) hitless for seven innings as the Polar Bears (10-12, 3-1 CBB) took a 5-1 victory on Leahey Field, sweeping the season series.

Porter (1-0) faced the minimum and struck out five in his first seven innings of work, allowing just a first-inning walk to Bates senior Jason Coulie (Manchester, N.H.), who was caught stealing on Porter's next pitch. Bates junior 1B Matt Pound (Santa Fe, N.M.) broke up the no-hitter, leading off the eighth with a single back up the middle. Pound scored two batters later on a single by sophomore SS Ben Donaldson (Lamoine, Maine) that chased Porter. Bowdoin sophomore Scott Jamieson (Marshfield, Mass.) came on and retired five of the six Bates batters he faced for his second save of the season.

Bowdoin scored four runs in the sixth inning off Bates junior lefty Kevin Walsh (Wakefield, Mass.), three of which were unearned. The big blow was a bases-loaded single by rookie catcher Chris Davidson (Plymouth, Mass.) that drove in two runs to put the Polar Bears up 4-0. Junior SS Greg Lovely (Milton, Mass.) also had an RBI single in the big inning, while sophomore RF Jamie Suzor (Kennebunk, Maine) added a sacrifice fly. The loss spoiled a complete game effort for Walsh, his second of the season (0-6).

Bates plays host to St. Joseph's College on Thursday at 1 p.m., while Bowdoin travels to Waterville to take on CBB foe Colby Friday at 3:30.
