Swimming and Diving

Men Finish in Top Half at New Englands; Three School Records Established

The Bates Men's Swimming and Diving team finished 14th out of 29 teams at the New England Division III Championships held March 1-3 at Wesleyan University.

First-year diver David Burke once again had an outstanding performance, setting school records for 11 dives in the one- and three-meter competition. His score of 389.45 was good for fourth overall in the one- meter, while he scored a 363.45 in the three-meter competition, finishing sixth overall. Sophomore Steve Simmons also set a school record in the finals of the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 24.44 seconds. He finished 13th. First-year swimmer Damon Bowe had two other top-10 finishes for the Bobcats, coming in seventh on the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.32) and ninth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.44), setting personal best times in each event.

Others who scored points for Bates were senior co-captains Chris Eastman and Dave Gair, junior diver MIchael Yee, first-year diver Corey Smith and first-year breaststroker Chris Orpilla.

Women's Indoor Track

Women's Track 23rd in ECACs

The women's indoor track team were competitive at the ECAC Division III Championships at Wheaton, finishing 23rd of 31 teams. The Bobcats' highest finisher was the 4 x 800 relay team, which finished fourth with a time 9:57.32. Bates' highest individual finisher was first-year student Adelia Myrick who finished sixth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:44.27. Their performances earned them All-ECAC honors.

Impressive performances were also turned in by first-year student Meghan Lockwood who finished eighth in the 400 meter with a time of 1:00.67, junior Megan Lane who finished eleventh in the 5000 meter with a time of 19:09.05, and junior Kirstin Achenbach who finished eleventh with a time of 2:24.55.

Men's Indoor Track

Led by Weight Throwers, Men Finish Eighth at ECAC's

Bates placed five of the seven finalists in the 35-pound weight to lead the Bobcats to a seventh placfinish overall, one point behind Ithaca. Junior Jon Eden finished second with a throw of 52'4", Sam Martin, also a junior, was an inch behind with a throw of 52'3", and junior Spencer Potter finished fourth with a throw of 51'11.5". Junior Mike Kolter and first- year student Bill McEvila rounded out the top seven with throws of 49'0" and 47'5.5", respectively.

Sophomore Walter Brown placed third in the shot put with a throw of 48'8" and junior Steven Beardsley placed third in the 1000m with a time of 2:34.2 to conclude the scoring for the Bobcats. Also of note, the mile relay team had its best preformance of the year, finishing with a time of 3:34.
