Women's Hoops Takes Two out of Three at Home, Surpasses '94-'95 Win Total

The women's basketball team continued to play well, going 2-1 on the week and upping their record to 9-4, eclipsing last year's seven-win season.

Bates gave Southern Maine, the No. 1 team in New England at the time, a battle on Jan. 17 before falling, 73-62. The Huskies could not shake the Bobcats in the first half, as Bates trailed by just three at the break, 38- 35. The Bobcats hung close and took their only lead of the second half with 11:40 remaining on an offensive rebound by first-year guard Colleen McCrave. Southern Maine scored the next eight points, however, and pulled away from there. First-year forward A.T. Taylor was one of three Bates players acheiving double-doubles, leading the squad with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while junior center Sarah Bonkovsky added 13 points and 10 rebounds. McCrave pitched in 12 pointsand 10 boards.

Bates rebounded nicely, dropping Savannah College of Art and Design, 75- 48. The Bees entered the game with a 10-4 record, and the two teams were even through the first 10 minutes of the contest. Bates went on a 12-4 spurt over a three and a half minutes span that extended a slim 13- 12 lead to a 25-16 bulge, highlighted by 3-point baskets by junior forward Nicole Woodson and first-year forward Kristen Porter. From there, the Bobcats closed out the second half by outscoring the Bees 16-3 over the last 7:10 to go to the break with a 43-25 lead. Bonkovsky led all players with 27 points and 13 rebounds, while Taylor had 15 points and McCrave had 12 rebounds, 12 assists and seven steals on the day.

The Bobcats survived their next game, a 79-75 affair with the University of New England. The first half was a back-and forth-affair, with Bates taking a lead it would not relinquish about four and a half minutes into the game, when they went on a 10-2 run to take a 16-9 lead. Though the Knights closed to within 28-25 with 7:28 remaining after an 8-2 run of their own, the Bobcats immediately went on a 15-2 run over the next five minutes, capped by a 3-pointed by Taylor, who had a game-high 15 first- half points. Bonkovsky had 14 points and eight rebounds for Bates at the break. Bates went into the locker room with a 45-34 halftime advantage, including 12-of-14 from the free throw line, while UNE did not get to the charity stripe once. Bates maintained its 11 point cushion for much of the second half. UNE put on its big run with three minutes to go in the game. With the score 75-63, Bates, UNE went on an 11-2 run, bringing them within 77-74 with 39.1 seconds left. After Bates turned the ball over, UNE got two good looks at the basket, but Porter, who was making her first collegiate start, pulled down a huge rebound with 8.1 seconds left. She was fouled immediately and coolly sank both free throws to put the game out of reach, 79-74. Bates was led by Taylor's 23 points and 18 points and 11 rebounds from Bonkovsky, while Porter had a season-high 11 points.
