Women's Hoops Starts Semester 3-1; Bonkovsky Sets Records, Takes Home Awards

The women's basketball team is off to their best start in five years, having gone 7-3 overall, 3-1 so far in January.

The Bobcats started the semester with a bang, easily handling 5-2 Colby-Sawyer, 103-59, opening up a 10-0 lead in the first two minutes and rolling from there. Junior center Sarah Bonkovsky dominated the game, scoring 37 points on 17-for-22 shooting from the field, establishing Bates single-game records for points and field goals made. Also against the Chargers, first-year guard Colleen McCrave recorded a rare triple- double: 17 points, 12 steals and 10 assists. The 12 steals was another Bates single-game record.

Thomas College came to Lewiston next, and the Terriers did not fare much better, losing 90-58. The Bates women jumped out to a 15-5 lead early on and never looked back, extending the lead to 40-23 at the half. Bates was led by Bonkovsky, who had 12 points and eight rebounds, while McCrave scored 10 points and had 6 steals. In the second half, the Bobcats extended the lead even further on a 12-2 run over a two-minute span starting with 9:23 to go in the game, including a pair of steals by McCrave. For the game, McCrave led all scorers with 24 points and for the second time in as many games broke a school record for steals with 14. The Bobcats placed three other starters in double figures, first-year forward A.T. Taylor (22 points, 8 rebounds), Bonkovsky (18 points, 12 rebounds) and senior guard Dianna Devlin (17 points, 7 assists).

The Bobcats hit the road for their next two contests. In the first, against Skidmore, the fifth ranked team in New York, Bates saw its four-game winning streak snapped, 65-53. The game marked the team's lowest scoring output for the season, almost 30 points below their 81.2 points- per-game average. Bonkovsky had 21 points and 10 boards, while Taylor had 12 and McCrave 11. It wasn't enough, though, as the Greyhounds shot 49.2 percent from the field and 71.4 from the line, while the Bobcats were 35.9 from the field and 33.3 from the line.

Coach Jim Murphy's team rebounded nicely the next afternoon, however, downing Union, 87-60. This time Taylor led the way with 29 points, including 4-for-7 from three point range. The first three of those came in the first 1:30 of the game to help Bates to an early 13-0 lead which held to 39-25 at the half. Bonkovsky added 18 points and 13 boards for the 'Cats. McCrave was the only other plyer in double figures, scoring 10 before fouling out.

For their efforts, Bonkovsky and McCrave were both honored by several groups. Bonkovsky, who averaged 23.5 points and 11.5 rebounds and had 11 steals and seven blocks in the four games, in addition to her two Bates records, was named Player of the Week by the ECAC, NESCAC and New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA). McCrave was named Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) Rookie of the Week and was named to the ECAC Weekly Honor Roll.

Garvey Reaches 1,000, Earns Player of the Week Honors

The Bobcat men have started the second semester slowly, losing three of their first four to drop out of the New England and Maine polls and send their record to 6-4.

The Bobcats were outgunned by Colby-Sawyer in the semester's first game, 107-98. Junior guard Matt Garvey had 35 points, including 10- for-16 from behind the three-point arc, setting a school record for trifectas in a game. Junior forward Mike Marsh had 29 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Adam Piandes had 16 points and eight assists. Unfortunately, it was not enough, as the Chargers bench outscored the Bobcats', 52- 6, led by ECAC Player of the Week Jim McGilvery's 37.

Bates had all it could handle two days later against Thomas, a team playing its fourth game in as many days. The two clubs battled back and forth in the first half, with the Bobcats going on a late 5-0 run to take a 37-27 halftime lead. The Bobcats were led at the half by Piandes' 21 points. The teams traded baskets for much of the first part of the second half, but Thomas took its only lead of the second half, 55-54, with 9:40 to go, as first-year guard Chris Heal hit the second of two 3- pointers, capping a 10-0 Thomas run over a 3:15 span. The Bobcats answered however, going on a 12-2 run of their own, highlighted by senior forward Jon White's three-pointer at 7:21 left. The run put the Bobcats up 65- 58. Thomas clawed to within 77-74 with 23.1 seconds left, thanks to two more trifectas from Heal, but Garvey hit seven-of-eight free throws in the final minute of play to give Bates the 80-74 victory. The Bobcats were led by Piandes 27 points, which he scored despite suffering a concussion in the first half. Garvey added 19 and Marsh had 16, while senior forward Jay Lowe grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Saturday against Skidmore, Garvey needed just eight points to become the 19th player in Bates history and the second this season to notch 1,000 points. Though he was not in the starting line-up, Garvey nailed a three- pointer about eight minutes into the game to earn the milestone. Coincidentally, a Skidmore player also reached the plateau in that game. Garvey ended the game with 33 points and seven rebounds, while junior center Jesse Strandberg came off the bench to net a season high 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Unfortunately, Bates was unable to climb back into the game after falling behing early and lost, 88-74.

Things were not much better at Union on Sunday, as the coach Jeff Brown's team fell again, 79-69. Garvey poured in 26 points in that one, but was the only Bates player to reach double figures. The Bobcats had trouble finding the bottom of the bucket, as they were outshot by the Dutchmen 48 percent to 33 percent.

Despite a rough week for the team, Garvey put up some stellar numbers. He averaged 28.3 points per game and shot 24-for-49 from long distance. that, coupled with his reaching the 1,000-point plateau, earned him NESCAC and Maine College Basketball Coaches and Writers Association Player of the Week honors, as well as a nod on the ECAC Weekly Honor Roll.

Bates Swimmers Splits with Vermont Rivals

The Bates men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Norwich University and Middlebury College on Jan. 12-13 and came away with a win and a loss each.

On Friday, the Bobcats swept Norwich. The women won by a score of 130- 82, coming in first in every race, and in both diving events. Multiple individual winners were senior Melissa Sander in the 50 freestyle (26.22) and 200 butterfly (2:15.72), junior Jen Weiers in the 100 individual medley (1:06.81) and 200 breaststroke (2:38.23), sophomore Denby Johnson in the 200 and 100 freestyle (2:01.51 and 56.52) and sophomore diver Kate Gibson in the 1M required (149.75) and 1M optional (150.53).

The men's team topped the Cadets, 156-82, winning all but two races. Multiple winners were senior co-captain Chris Eastman in the 200 and 500 freestyle (1:52.21 and 5:09.09), first-year swimmer Damon Bowe in the 200 individual medley (2:07.07) and 200 backstroke (2:08.87) and first- year diver David Burke 1M required (149.90) and 1M optional (224.25).

On Saturday, the tables were turned. The Bobcats went from outmanning Norwich in one meet to being outmanned themselves the next day against Middlebury. The women lost 174-120. Johnson turned in another outstanding performance, winning the 50 backstroke (29.76), 50 freestyle (25.91) and 100 freestyle (56.54). The Bobcats also got a fine performance from Weiers, who won the 50 breaststroke (33.97) and came in second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.86). Their record now stands at 3-2.

The men's team suffered a similar fate against the Panthers, losing 173- 118. Winners for Bates were Bowe in the 50 breaststroke (30.05), first- year student Chris Orpilla in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.71), Eastman in the 500 freestyle (5:15.99) and Burke, who established a Bates school record in 1M diving with a score of 251.80, topping his own mark set earlier in the season. Middlebury's Mike McCollum set two Tarbell Pool records, in the 50 and 100 butterfly (24.35 and 53.45). The Bobcats are now 2-3 on the season.
