Coach Bob Flynn's baseball team finished with a 7-14 record. Two of those wins came at home against Bowdoin and ECAC qualifier Colby, giving them a one-third share of the CBB title. Junior pitcher Chris Snow (Tewksbury, Mass.) threw a pair of complete games against the CBB opponents. He threw a five-hitter against Bowdoin as the Bobcats won 2-1. Against Colby amid flurries, Snow won 9-6, behind home runs by senior designated hitter Jeff Barricelli (Beverly, Mass.) and first-year centerfielder Austin Philbin (Clinton, Mass.). Philbin led the team in nearly every major category: hitting (30-78, .385), RBI (14), runs scored (21), stolen bases (4) and fielding percentage (.979).
The men's lacrosse team finished the season at 9-6, clinching a winning record for the third time in four years. First-year attackman Mike D'Addario (Locust Valley, N.Y.), a two-time NESCAC Co-Player of the Week, established a school single-season record with 59 goals, while his nine goals against Maine Maritime was a single-game record. D'Addario was ranked seventh in the nation in goals per game, while classmate Dirk Huntington (Falls Church, Va.) was eighteenth overall in goals against average, allowing just over eight per game. The Bobcats finished in the top ten in the Brine New England Division III poll for the second year in a row. Senior Carter Jons (Potomac, Md.), a career hundred-point scorer was named to the NEILA East/West All-Star game.
The women's lacrosse team got off to a quick start, winning their first two games of the season on a western trip, topping Colorado College and Whittier. In the season opener at Colorado College, senior Lydia Langford (Wellesley, Mass.) equaled a school record with eight goals in a game. After dropping the next five games, Stacey Watts's squad rebounded to win three of their last five, including a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory at Colby, avenging an earlier loss at home to the White Mules. Sophomore Julie Lundman (Worthington, Ohio) had seven goals in the game, including two in overtime. The Bobcats ended the season with a record of 5-7.
In coach Sherry Deschaine's final season at the helm of the softball team, the Bobcats had a very good start, winning seven of their first 12, including a doubleheader sweep of Bowdoin and a 15-0 win over Thomas. Unfortunately, they dropped their final eight games to finish 7-13, missing doubling their win total from the previous season by one game. Junior outfielder Brandi Richards (Kingfield, Maine) led the team in hitting (.359), RBI (17), runs scored (16) and doubles (7), while sophomore pitcher Becki Gasior (Park Ridge, N.J.) had five wins and a 3.49 ERA.
Paul Gastonguay '89's men's tennis team, at 4-8, lost three matches by a score of 5-4. The team struggled with the loss of six seniors from last year's NCAA qualifier. Sophomore Brian Kend (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), playing No. 2, reached the semifinals of his flight at the NESCAC and State championships, while junior captain Lonnie Klein (Riverdale, N.Y.), playing No. 1, reached the Maine State championship match. Kend and first-year player John Tucker (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) at No. 5 each finished 10-2 in duel match play.
The men's track team had another successfull season under coach Al Fereshetian. They finished second at the State Meet, fourth at the NESCAC championships and tied for ninth at New Englands. Senior Paul Kolter (Manchester, N.H.) became the fourth man in bates track history to be named an All-American both indoors and outdoors in the same year, taking fourth place at the NCAA championships in the hammer throw. Junior Justin Freeman (Enfield, N.H.) also qualified for nationals in the 10,000-meter run, but did not score. Both were named All-New England in their respective events, as were senior tri-captain Stee Beardsley (Melrose, Mass.) in the 1,500-meters and junior Walter Jackson (West Hartford, Conn.) in the shot put.
Senior Heather Bumps (South China, Maine) qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships in the javelin throw at her first meet of the season and won her third straight NESCAC title in that event. By finishing eighth at the NCAA championships, Bumps became the first woman to earn All-America honors in three straight seasons. Sophomore Amy Taylor (Orono, Maine) set a school record of 17 feet, four inches in the long jump in finishing second at the NESCAC championships. She was fourth at the New England championships, as was senior Ilse Abusamra (Byfield, Mass.) in the 10,000-meter run. First-year middle-distance runner Kate Burakowski (Derry, N.H.) was fifth in the 1,500-meters and also ran the opening leg of the Bobcat's All-New England 4x800-meter relay. Carolyn Court's team finished in a tie for 17th place at New Englands.
