Men's Lacrosse Wins Home Opener; Brady Takes Home Player of the Week

After giving up two goals in the first three minutes at Maine Maritime on April 3, everything went the Bobcats way. They outscored the Mariners 9-0 the rest of the way and cruised to the 16-5 victory. Junior attack Tim Brady notched seven goals on seven shots for the day, falling one shy of the school record, set last year by Shane Kokoruda. Junior midfielder Josh Baschnagel added four goals, while senior tri- captain Rob Toomey handed out five assists and scored a goal of his own. Senior goalkeeper Matt Arsenault settled down after allowing the two quick goals to stop 25 of Maine Maritime's 30 shots on goals.

April 6 marked the Bobcats' first home game of the season after six straight on the road, thanks to an early season rain-out. Bates took on Wesleyan, an opponent they had not beaten since 1987. Again the Bobcats fell behind 2-0 early, before junior midfielder Dan Peterson and Brady each scored before the end of the first quarter to tie the score. Brady gave Bates their first lead of the game three minutes into the second, but Wesleyan scored the next two, followed by a Toomey goal at the 6:31 mark. It looked like the teams would go to halftime tied at four, but junior midfielder Carter Jons and Brady each scored in the last minute of play in the first half, giving the Bobcats a 6-4 lead at the break, a lead they would never relinquish. Brady scored Bates' first goal of the second half less than a minute after the Cardinals had cut the lead to one. The Bobcat defense then took over, allowing Wesleyan no goals in the last 21 minutes of the game. Arsenault finished with 16 save on the day and lowered his goals-against-average to 10.22. Peterson, who led the team with three assists in the game, notched a goal with 24 seconds left in the game to ice the 8-6 win, giving the Bobcats their first victory against a NESCAC opponent since 1990.

By scoring 11 goals in two games, including four crucial tallies in the win over Wesleyan, Brady earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors. The team's record is now 4-3.

Men and Women Take Second at Tufts; Three Women Set Records While Eden Makes Nationals

On the women's side, senior Heather Bumps established a school record in the javelin with a throw of 140' 8", smashing the old record by a full three feet. A pair of first-year field competitors also put their names in the record book. A.T. Taylor had a long jump of 16' 7.25", topping the mark of 16' 6" she had tied a week ago, while Lindsey Hescock tied the school mark in the high jump with a leap of 5' 2". Other winners for the Bobcats on the day were first-year runners Adelia Myrick in the 800m and Meghan Lockwood in the 100m hurdles.

For the men, senior Jon Eden was one of four Bates winners on the day, but more importantly, he qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships with a hammer throw of 166' 3". First-year pole vaulter Peter Beeson won his event with a vault of 12'. Sophomore Walter Jackson won a third field event for the Bobcats, with a heave of 46' 2". The 4x400 relay team of junior Steve Beardsley, Beeson, senior Matt Lincoln and junior Chip Nobel were tops with a time of 3:37.

Baseball Drops Two to NESCAC Foes, Sweeps Doubleheader

Sophomore Chris Snow pitched well against Bowdoin, and the Bobcats spotted him a two-run lead in the third inning. Junior leftfielder Chuck Cullinane singled with one out, moved to third on junior shortstop Pat Cosquer's double, and both men scored on two passed balls by the Polar Bears' catcher. The key inning for Snow was the sixth. The Polar Bears had managed just three hits and struck out six times over the first five frames. With Bates up 2-1, Bowdoin's leadoff hitter in the sixth popped a ball that would have been routine for junior first baseman Pete Marino on any other day, but which got caught in the wind and fooled him, letting the batter reach safely. Snow struck out the next hitter before giving up back-to-back single to load the bases. The next batter popped weakly to senior third baseman Ari Friedlaender, which would have ended the inning had Marino made the play at first. Unfortunately, it didn't and Snow was touched up for a grand slam. Bowdoin got three more runs off junior reliever Jon Smith. The Bobcats' eighth inning rally produced two more runs on two Polar Bear errors, but it wasn't enough, as Bates fell, 8-4.

Against Tufts, Bates was overmatched by a team that had played 11 more games. After junior starter Andy MacLeod gave up a run in the second, the Bobcats answered in the bottom half of the inning, as junior second baseman Peter Lawrence-Riddell reached on a dropped third strike and scored on Cosquer's two- out single. The Jumbos knocked MacLeod with five runs in the third and touched up junior reliever Jeff Barricelli for five in the fourth to take an 11-1 lead. Marino singled in a pair of runs for the Bobcats in the fifth, but they couldn't sustain the rally and fell, 13-4.

Luckily for coach Flynn's charges, Maine-Presque Isle is not a member of NESCAC, and the Owls were much easier to handle. The Bobcats outscored UMPI 28-4 in the two games, including 11-1 in the first inning. Snow went six innings in the first game, striking out five and giving up just two unearned runs, before turning the game over to junior Matt Garvey for the seventh inning. Smith hurled a five inning complete game in the second game, whiffing seven. The big hitter for the day was Friedlaender, who was 3-5 with a double, a triple, three RBI and one run scored. Lawrence-Riddell was 4-7 with four runs scored and an RBI, while junior rightfielder Craig Machnik was 3-3 with two RBI and three runs scored in the second game. Bates enters finals week with a 2-2 record.

Softball Snaps Losing Streak at Four

The game with UNE was really not much of a contest. Though Bates got on the board in the top of the first without a hit, the Knights scored four in the bottom of the inning and cruised from the there. The Bobcats only managed one hit the rest of the way, a single by junior co-captain and catcher Heather Chichester, as the game was called after five innings due to the 12-run rule.

In the first game against UMPI, the Bates offense was shut down by the Owls pitching. The Bobcats managed just three hits while striking out 12 times in the game. Down 3-0 in the sixth, the 'Cats got a pair of unearned runs on a dropped ball in the bottom of that inning, but first-year pitcher Becky Gasior and some shaky defense gave it back in the top of the seventh, as the Owls went on to win 5-2.

In the second game, Bates showed some of the enthusiasm that coach Sherry Deschaine expected from the squad, rallying from a couple of defecits to win 11-10. UMPI touched up junior pitcher Kara Jackson for three runs in the first and led 8-6 going into the bottom of the fifth, when the Bobcats offense came alive, batting around and scoring three runs on RBI singles by first-year outfielders Abbey DeRocker, Emily Morningstar and pitcher Jackson, who picked up the win despite seven walks. DeRocker was 2-3 in the second game, while sophomore Tonie Taft, who played third base and junior catcher Heather Chichester scored five of the Bobcats' runs.
