retired as director of off-campus studies and associate professor of French. He
now plans to spend time in Phippsburg. He is known for mixing "a variety of
disciplines in his teaching, drawing from his professional interests in the
practical problems of cross-cultural communication." | ||

Moreshead is
an
academic tutor. Because of a severe hearing loss, she gave up classroom
teaching, but is busy with sign language classes, the literature seminar of the
Maine Humanities Council, and she has taken up golf again after 30 years. Her
children are spread all around the country, but came to Boothbay Harbor for
daughter Susan's May 12 wedding to William Rice. She works for Peoples Heritage
Bank in Portland. Army first lieutenant Andrew is stationed at Fort Bragg,
N.C., David and his wife practice law in Norwich, Conn., and Cynthia is a
graduate student in clinical psychology at Pepperdine Univ.... "After a stint
of free-lance proofreading and editing," writer Sarah Foster Smith says, "I'm
now working as an editor for Home Planners, a publisher of house plans." She
still plays the piano, accompanying several violinists. The Smiths love living
in Tucson, happy that son Derek lives with them while finishing school, but
wish they were closer to their first grandchild, Tyler David, living in far
away Buffalo, N.Y.... Kellogg Graduate School of Management of Northwestern
Univ. recently honored Edmund Wilson for his 25 years of dedication to the

Next Reunion in 2001. Sam Aloisi writes that by the time you read this,
his
son, Sam, and wife Lynne will have made him a grandfather for the first time,
"joining the ranks of those classmates having already attained the title of
grandparent."... Bill Arata's oldest son, Christopher, graduated from
UMaine/Orono in psychology. Son Greg '96, an actor in Minneapolis, finished an
apprenticeship with the Children's Theatre there. Bill and Sally are both
fine.... Cynthia Bagster-Collins continues to work as a special educator at the
Thornt on Burgess Middle School in Hampden, Mass.... In New London, N.H., Linda
Cummings Messer continues to teach a behavioral program for elementary
students. She also still sells real estate.... Ralph Day sang in seven Swiss
and French cathedrals after he joined a local oratorio society in order to be
in on their European tour.... At the Pittsburgh Foundation, Jane Downing writes
that she is responsible for analyzing what jobs pay living wages and finding
low-cost transportation solutions to help welfare clients find jobs in the
suburbs. She is optimistic about finding solutions.... Tom Fox and family have
finally finished remodeling their home in Nantucket.... Peter Gomes has
flourished in promoting his book, The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind
and Heart, which has received enthusiastic response. Last June he received
honorary degrees from Duke, the College of Wooster, and the University of
Nebraska.... Bill Goodlatte is the vice president of Human Resources at Robert
Allen Inc., in Mansfield, Mass.... Since January, Bill Gosling has been interim
director at the University of Michigan Library, the sixth-largest research
library in North America. He continues to enjoy gardening, collecting playing
cards and pop-up books, and traveling with his family.... Peggy Grimmeisen
Gardiner graduated from Tufts University's Boston School of Occupational
Therapy last May and works at New England Rehabilitation Hospital.... Jean
Hager-Rich writes that all's well in St. Maarten, where she is still managing
two restaurants. She and Marvin were in Ocean Park to celebrate family
birthdays and visit with Bates friends in August.... Peter Heyel writes that
his bus business is going great, with wholesale tours for groups in the United
States, Canada, and Europe. His favorite thing is to teach sailing in the
British Virgin Islands in November, January, and April each year.... This
January Rich Hillman and his wife will return to Venezuela for six months. He
has published his third book, a college text, Understanding Contemporary Latin
America.... Karen Hjelm moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she is a consultant
for
Cap Gemini America and works in mainframe programming.... Mary Ingraham
Agostino's biggest news is her retirement from state service last August.
"There's a whole new world out there," she says.... Class secretary Louise
Kennedy Hackett and Dave '64 had a great summer. "Our usual vacation in
Ocean
Park was sunny every day. I continue to work for the state with families and
dream of retiring like Mary. I still do a couple of teddy bear shows a year and
really enjoy creating new bears."... Karin Mueller McElvein still works in
husband David's business. She also has taken up quilting, even made one for her
new grandson. "Being a grandparent is terrific. All the joy without the worry
and hassle."... Our "beloved class president" Joyce Mantyla and husband
continue to travel a lot. Last June she saw Judy Morris Edwards and had a great
visit.... Jean Ellen LeSure has just completed 32 years of teaching and also
has been doing some pen and ink drawings this past year.... Last summer Karen
Smith Regan's son, Sergio, moved to Spain to work for the research division of
the French telephone company, Alcatel. Karen saw Bates friends in Ocean Park
last summer since daughter Emily worked there. In September she was in charge
of an exchange program with students from Spain who arrived at Wayland (Mass.)
High School (with help from Peter Heyel's charter bus service!). This February
she will take a group of American students to Spain for three weeks.... Sally
O. Smyth received her master's in environmental policy last May. She is now
busy doing non-profit work in Camden.... The week before Christmas 1996, Carol
Stone Beyna and husband moved to Maine, and were renting a house. Last summer
they took a two-week trip to Eastern Europe. Husband Ron was especially
thrilled to visit Poland where all four of his grandparents were born. "Now we
want to go back and explore more places." They love living in Maine and can go
to concerts and sports events at Bates now and then.... Russ Wagenfeld and
family still live in Germany and they plan to return to the States in two
years.... While she nursed a broken arm, Judy Wells Wait had time to go to son
David's graduation from Colorado School of Mines, his wedding in Durango, a
family reunion for 57 people at Columbia Lake, Conn., and to drive an elderly
uncle from Seattle to Anchorage with a U-Haul. | ||

Next Reunion in 2001.To celebrate their 25th anniversary, Nancy Carvalho
Fraze
and her husband toured Ireland and Scotland with a group of friends with whom
they shared 25 years of friendship. Daughter Meghan graduated from Yale and son
Grant is in ninth grade.... Marion Clough Hillsdon received her M.Ed. from East
Stroudsburg Univ. in 1996 and now daughter Jennifer is a student there. Marion
is an elder of the First Presbyterian Church, president of the church
corporation and moderator of the Presbyterian Women.... After being at home for
18 years, Dana Dertinger Letvin teaches second grade in the Detroit public
schools. Despite large classes, lack of support, and inadequate books and
supplies, she finished the year on a positive note and has given it another try
this year. Good luck, Dana!... Greg Egner still flies planes for American
Airlines while wife Sue is into dressage horseback riding and daughter Sara
studies at the Univ. of Texas. He keeps in touch with his Bates roommates, Bob
Colman and Chris Mossberg and reports that they are both well. Bob, by the
way,
returned to Bates for the first time at our last Reunion. In March, Greg had
the pleasure of having Elaine Makas and her mother on board a flight to
Miami.... Tim Hall continues to serve on the Annual Alumni Fund Committee, is
a
member of the Montgomery County (Md.) Securities Economic Advisory Commission,
and was slated to become chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. He proudly
reports that the children are gainfully employed -- Seth with Andersen
Consulting in Chicago and Alyssa, an investment banker with Bankers Trust in
New York.... Last July, Lucille Howell Sansing became vice president for
academic affairs at the College of Notre Dame in Belmont, Calif. Daughter Dina
graduates from Vassar in May.... Patricia Korol Wilson is with the Defense
Contract Audit Agency which, in the past, required a lot of travel. Now she is
assigned mainly to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and spends more time gardening,
attending the theater and concerts and navigating her husband's Cessna. They
also have traveled by other means to Alaska, Italy, and Greece. Their daughters
live in Chatham, Mass., and Dallas.... John Lanza looks forward to his annual
trip to Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, N.Y., where "he and about 100 other
retreads don major league uniforms and play ball for a week of pain and
pleasure."... Watch for the publication of The College Application Essay by
Sarah Myers McGinty, former Bates Trustee for seven years. She supervises
student teachers at Harvard's School of Education and sent son John William off
to college last fall. Daughter Sarah beginning to look and Bill working hard at
Boston Latin School.... In 1996, Rick Powers became president of Playtex
Personal Products. At Bates, son Greg '99 plays football and studies with a 3.0
GPA, and son Ted entered last fall, Class of '01. To say Rick is thrilled would
be an understatement.... Charlotte Singer Krause has relocated to Albuquerque,
N.M., to work with Sun Healthcare Group as MIS director for corporate systems.
She and Bill are building a Southwestern home and enjoy the change from
Southern Cal.... The Greater Keene (N.H.) Chamber of Commerce has a new
president in Dave Sutherland -- this after 30 years in broadcasting. Dave still
announces stock car races, is treasurer and newsletter editor for the New
England Antique Radio Club, and with wife Karen operates an antiques
business.... Diane Wallace Gilbert has completed a term as international
president of the Society of Research Administrators and will continue to travel
throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe as past president of the
organization. She is managing director of the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for
Aged Research and Training in Boston, and also has authored papers in the area
of scientific integrity.... Ann Warren Turner writes that she and husband Rick
"are still living in our solar, hand-built house atop a ridge in western
Massachusetts. We can hear coyotes, see wild turkeys, bears and occasionally a
mountain lion. Son Ben is in fourth grade and Charlotte is in kindergarten. Ann
is working on a new novel for Scholastic that will be part of the new "Dear
America" series: girls' diaries set in different historical periods. Recently
published is her new picture book from Harper, Shaker Hearts. Ann saw Kathy
Smyth three years ago in Toronto where she is active in human services, and she
would like news of the whereabouts of Elaine Beede Bennett. | ||

Next Reunion in 1999.Paul Lavallee served as the deputy mayor of the
Olympic Village at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta two summers ago. He had a
chance encounter with Bryant Gumbel '70, who was there hosting the Today
