Next Reunion in 1998. Still "In The Mood?" Think Bates! Think 55th Reunion!
Mark June 5-7, 1998! Sixteen '43ers (the largest number of any of the 1998
Reunion classes present) enjoyed a mini-reunion Sept. 12 and 13 as they planned
for their 55th Reunion and looked forward to June when the rest of the class
will join them. Present were: Phyllis and George Antunes, Howard and
Lucy Davis
Baker, Bill Buker, Gil and Marge Cahall Center, Dick
Fee, Gina and
Web Jackson,
Jean Lombard Dyer, Sam and Jane White Stoddard, Nancy
Terry Park,
Betty and
Minert Thompson, Horace and Phyllis Hicks Wood. And this is what
they report:
Howard Baker says, "We have had a great two days of planning and our 55th
should be the best Reunion the Class of '43 has ever held."... Lucy Davis
Baker: "Do join us for the 55th. Hope we can still have a great time with fond
memories of Bates."... Marje Cahall Center: "Sharing ideas for our 55th Reunion
has been fun. Those who missed the 50th as well as those who didn't, will want
to plan right now to be in Lewiston June 5-7."...Gil Center: "Even though
Reunions have something of a bittersweet quality, I always find them to be
energizing experiences. I strongly urge you to be there for last one of this
century. (Can you believe it?)... Dick Fee: "A great weekend!"... Jean
Lombard
Dyer: "Come! Come! Come! If you never have come -- if you always have come --
if you have come sometimes -- come this time!"... Sam Stoddard: "One of the
pleasantest aspects of our planning the Reunion was to see so many of our old
friends. It seems as though we are all hanging in there and are (still) "In the
Mood."... Jane White Stoddard: "Always great to come back to Bates. Ditto on
above comments."... Mickey Walker: "Always great to see old friends."

Next Reunion in 2002. The best Reunion ever was attended by about 50
classmates, many guests, and a delegation from the V-12 led by Dana Smith,
who
also brought volumes of scrapbooks about the V-12 unit members stationed at
Bates and what's been happening to them since 1944. Reunion activities that we
enjoyed included the wonderful banquet Thursday evening with Prexy and Mrs.
Phillips as our guests, and the breakfast with President Harward, who had done
his research diligently to remind us of life in the '40s. Among other special
events was our special class gathering on Sunday. Outgoing co-president Stan
Freeman summed it up: "The turnout at the Ivy on Sunday morning was testimony
to the cohesiveness of this class. Clearly we want to hold on to all our
classmates by hugging those who are present and remembering those who have
passed on." Recent news: Dick Baldwin was "on the road again last fall" for two
weeks in China and a week in Tanzania.... Alton and Marjorie Harvey
Moore were
in St. Louis in July for the national Shrine meeting. Alton is on his way to be
potentate of Aleppo Temple in Massachusetts.... Dick Sprince has a video of
Reunion to share with classmates.... And special thanks to Marcia Wiswall
Lindberg for her outstanding job on the album. | ||
Class Secretary: Marjorie Willard Travis, 185 Grant St.,
Lexington, MA 02173-2126 Co-Class Presidents: John and Isabel Planeta Gaffney, 36 N. Branch Rd., Concord, MA 01742-3808
Next Reunion in 1998. The Reunion committees and class officers met at Bates
in September to work on plans for our 50th Reunion, June 4-7 (mark the dates!).
Attending were Keith Cunningham, Richard Daly (co-chair of the Gift
Committee),
Hugh Dinwoodie, John and Isabel Planeta Gaffney, Jean
Holden, Harry
Jobrack
(chair of the Social Committee), Virginia Millard Kennedy, Royce
Miller,
Vivienne Sikora Gilroy (co-chair of the Gift Committee), Phyllis Smith
Baldwin,
Donald Sutherland, Marjorie Willard Travis, Richard
Woodcock, and Lois Young
Dennett. The campus looked wonderful -- lots of changes. If you haven't been
back recently, one building you will enjoy visiting is the new Alumni House at
67 Campus Avenue. Work is also well underway on the New Academic Building. And
when you do come back for our 50th Reunion, you will find that even though
Bates has changed, it is unmistakably our "dear old Bates." So, be there for
our 50th. We need you!< | ||
Class Secretary: Edith M. Routier, 2 Wellington Terr., Apt. 2,
Brookline, MA 02146-6747 Class President: Hugh Mitchell, 31 Mattoon St., Springfield, MA 01105-1715 Next Reunion in 1999. Imagine John Palmer's surprise when he ran into Bates graduate Jacqueline Bussiere '93 on top of Mount Rainier in Washington state. Both were on vacation (she just graduated from law school). They enjoyed "the spectacular spring view" from the fifth largest mountain in North America and talked about Bates.
