Next Reunion in 2000.Jim Amaral and wife Dolores Carbonneau continue to juggle their Borealis bread business and babies, including their own Sophia Rose Carbonneau, just over a year old. They opened a bakery in Wells in March 1997 and will be in the Portland public market when it opens this June. Dolores's midwifery practice keeps her busy.... Scott and Catherine Baird Burns run the family insurance business in Whitefield, N.H. She is working on an M.B.A. at Plymouth State, has a 1-year-old, and they are renovating their summer camp.... Paul Barrett is an endangered species biologist for the federal government in San Diego County, responsible for much of the Southwest. The job requires interminable hours of meetings with lawyers and planners in the Las Vegas airport. He almost lost his house in a wild fire last year. Paul and his wife went to Ireland a year ago in May, saying "y'all" and "howdy" a lot so as not to be confused with the British! Recently he went kayaking in the Sea of Cortez.... Robin Blank Carlson enjoys life in Baltimore with husband Kirk and children Eve (7) and Eric (3). Robin also works part time in the financial world of the YMCA. Not great pay, but the benefits of on-site preschool and lunch-time workouts compensate.... Last year Matt Buchman split his time between installing a new ticketing/fund-raising computer system for Seattle Opera and completing a moderately irreverent, fantasy novel, Cookbook from Hell. He plans a nationwide book tour this summer with several other Northwest authors and is writing a second novel, if he can get it done.... Brad Butler is plotting a long escape from the work-a-day world.... Eric Carboneau is enrolled in a post-baccalaureate degree program in geomatics, land surveying and mapping. He says it's a real joy to be a 'Gator and be warm while not having to pay state income tax.... Living in Stuttgart, Germany (home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche), Janna Eller Warburg continues to "shine in my role as Army wife and mother." Sarah (12) attends a gymnasium that emphasizes English language skills while son Max attends a German/Jewish kindergarten. Husband Rob is a Special Forces Company commander.... While on sabbatical last fall, Joe Farara worked on a promised novel, Blitz Kreig Baby. He and Nancy celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary. Son Keegan is three.... Rachel Fine Moore, still at Smith College, works on major and planned gifts such as charitable trusts, and joined the local Unitarian Society last year. Teaching Sunday school has been the most challenging task, she says. Daughter Elspeth, in third grade, danced for the second year in the pioneer Valley Ballet's Nutcracker.... Deborah Finney Prive tries to balance the work/family thing with Zachary (9) and Alison (7). She has worked full time at New England Medical Center in Boston as a budget/systems analyst in nursing administration for 16 years. She is a den leader for Cub Scouts, and their big decision this year will be to buy a bigger house. Husband Bob has finished his first year at the Sheraton Inn in Plymouth.... After college, Christine Flanders-Fielder attended nursing school, then opened a bed and breakfast, The Blue Goose (no joke) back home on Martha's Vineyard. Christine and Even Fielder have three boys -- David (8), William (6), and Bradley (1) -- and lots of animals. And she works part time at the local M.V. Hospital.... Now that her children are older, Debbie Gage Suzuki enjoys traveling, with trips to Telluride Bluegrass Festival last June and Kauai, Hawaii, for Thanksgiving. Husband Steve and daughters Becky and Sarah are all doing well.... John Gillespie has left his old job, moved to Connecticut, and started his own business: Prospector Partners, LLC. Wife Andrea, Casey (7), Lucas (2), and Chloe (1) are all healthy and happy.... After 20 years in Maine, Julie Groom Thompson and husband Bill decided it was time for a change. In late October they arrived in Utah, where she has accepted a job with the Red Cross. Now settled, they welcome visitors at their home on the Wasatch Front.... Soccer coach last fall for sons Christian (7) and Grant (5), Sue Grubba Rice has a day job for a year as head of human resources at Reed Elsevier Business Information and does a lot of traveling. Sue still manages to get in a four- to five-mile run a few days a week, and she took up golf last summer.... In April 1997, Elizabeth Holmes Bradley completed her M.Ed., and in May her first publication, "Is Algebra in the Cards?" came out in Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School. With her marriage in June, she gained a step-son Jessie's age. "Jessie is on the brink of teenager-hood. Yikes! I deal with one-hundred-plus 13- year-olds all day long. Now I have the joy of living with two. Tracy, the soccer hotshot, is now 11."... In Massachusetts, Arlyn J. Hubbell manages the Web support group at Shore.Net. She also is a perl and HTML instructor at Merrimack College and has written articles for a local software newspaper. Arlyn has realized her lifelong dream of living on an island. Her home in Nahant is "an extraordinary place and hearing the ocean at night can't be beat."... Having a blast with her 18-month-old son, Anne Keenan Shields still is at Carnegie Mellon and completing some consulting on a MSN Web project, Getworking, a career exploration and development site for twentysomethings.... Diane Kelley Heggerick has completed two years with Bay Networks, managing a marketing staff on both coasts with more international travel ahead. After two stints in Europe, she is happy to settle into life in the United States with husband Bob and Shelby (3).... Last summer, Cathy Klein relocated to Northern California. Husband Riad Maana is a scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Cathy is manager of financial planning for Natural Wonders Inc. Still looking for a house, their two-bedroom apartment was getting tiresome with three young boys who have adjusted well and enjoy their new schools, soccer, and music lessons. Their parents miss the East!... Jon Land reports same old, same old. "Wife, kids, house, job, cat, and we're happy."... After 17 years with Key Bank, Sue Lewis works in sales for a rapidly growing small company, Village Candle in Brunswick. She had monitored its success as their banker for two years. "It seemed like a great opportunity to get out of corporate America and try my hand at helping a growing company through its growing pains." Sue still loves living in Rockport with no desire to relocate.... All is well with the John Meades on Cape Cod. Patrick (5) is in kindergarten and Colin (3) is in preschool. Lisa practices law part time out of their house, and John enjoys his duties as the full-time register of deeds for Barnstable County and part-time country lawyer. With his sailing bug back last summer after a 15-year hiatus, he had a great time sailing J22s and Beetle Cats. His project for the winter was to restore a 40-year-old Beetle Cat back to racing form. "Given my woodworking skills, don't expect to see me entered in the America's Cup."... In Manhattan, Mary Mihalakos still works for a personal- injury litigation firm. She looks forward to vacationing on a Greek isle when she turns 40. One of Mary's two cats has three legs -- he is not "Tripod!"... This past winter in Mexico, Beth Newell was in Chiapas and the Yucatan with 23 students from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in a term-long program. She taught a course on ecology and conservation. The program included visits to rain forests, cloud forests, and mangrove swamps as well as Mayan archeological sites.... Gina Pasquini bought a vintage Colonial, Connecticut-style house and settled into a long winter under a blanket of snow. Their boys Graham (7), John (5), and Colin (3) keep their lives spinning.... Scott and Ann Prince Hecker added a miracle baby, Noel Francis, last October to join their two beautiful adopted daughters Paige (7) and Rima (5). In January Ann was back in the office as an editor for Massachusetts Audubon two days a week and also will work part time at home. Scott continues to protect rare coastal birds, terns. and plovers for the Audubon. The Heckers are enlarging their seacoast cottage to accommodate their three children.... Dave Reinhart likes his sales and marketing job, but it keeps him busy with travel. Debbie trys her best to hold down the "home fort," keep up with her volunteer activities and those of everyone else. Kathleen (3) is in preschool two days a week and Daniel is in second grade.... Since moving in 1991 from San Francisco to New Hampshire with wife Anne, Dylan (9), and Amy (7), Brad Smith is involved in three companies: Hopkins, which designs and manufactures amusement rides for parks worldwide; Skyfair, which owns and operates amusement rides in fairs across the country; and Atlantic Boat Co., which makes commercial fishing and sport/pleasure boats. "It's been great living back East, closer to Bates friends whom we see frequently."... In Portland, David Soley is a trial lawyer at Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer and Nelson. In his spare time, he is also the vice chair of the Freeport Town Council, co-chair of the Anti-Defamation League for Maine. He and Jackie live in Freeport with Daniel (11), Barbara (4), and Joshua (3). "Every now and then we return to Lewiston for a quick hike up Mount David."... Lisa Stifler O'Hanlon still teaches at the Dalton School. Husband Ray has a book due in March, The Irish in America, a contemporary social/political history.... After her grant and her job ended, Polly Swanson now works three days a week in data management, the same Pittsburgh department, but a different study. She hopped on the 'Net before vacationing in Florida to find all the fabric stores in the area, locating seven, but she only bought material in five. She sings in community and church choirs, and is busy with American Sewing Guild neighborhood group meetings. Polly is developing a Web site.... David and Christine Tegeler Beneman have a busy life with their three girls Sara (9), Lisa (6), and Katy (2), all of whom have very different needs and temperaments. Most of her time is spent in the Mom-chauffeur-volunteer mode. She has kept up with her painting, however, and had a couple of pieces in a Portland group show in the spring. David's challenging work has included several complicated time-consuming cases. He has been appointed to the Federal Resource Council for Maine in which he asists other Maine lawyers with their federal criminal cases.... Jeff and Lisa Jepson Wallstrom have been back in Maine for over three years and love living in Bangor. Jeff continues to thrive in his job as executive director of United Way of Eastern Maine. Lisa works part time for the Good Samaritan Agency as director of development and community relations, doing other volunteer work and singing in a community choral group. Now that Carl (5 1/2) and Nils (3) are older, the family enjoys short hikes and canoe trips exploring more of eastern Maine.... Mark and Heidi Duncanson Weaver '82 have a new daughter, Hope, whom they adopted in China in 1996.

In Worcester, Mass., Rhona Bennett is a part-time childbirth education teacher at St. Vincent Hospital.... A resident of Washington, D.C., Barry Boss left his law partnership to focus on criminal trial defense. He is an assistant federal public defender.... John Chapman manages the Hartford office of Triumph Capital Group.... Walter Dillingham writes that "it's been another adventurous year in New York City. I was interviewed by CNBC in June, we traveled around France in a rental car, did some meditating in Lourdes, and climbed Tripyramid Mountain with Chris Fisher and Jon Guild." ...While walking through the small village of Montezuma on the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica, Jerry Donahoe spotted Lint Harrington '94 wearing a Bates baseball cap. Jerry was nearing the end of a trip to Belize and Costa Rica while Lint was taking a weekend break from his teaching duties at the Quaker School in Monteverde, Costa Rica. "I wish I'd met Lint earlier, having walked past his school several times just a few days prior while exploring the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve."... Scott Elliott's three-year-old company, Commercial Group Underwriters, now has offices in three cities and reports sales of over $9 million.... Now living in the Boston area, Larry Finlayson spent most of the past two years in Europe as stage manager of Broadway-style tours of American musicals including Black and Blue and Crazy for You.... Since the arrival of her second child, Anne Gallop Pace enjoys some free-lance work in advertising print production.... In Cumberland, Felicia Garant is delighted with her first house. Although she lives only 15 miles from Portland, she writes, "I even have sheep for neighbors!"... While on leave from the Five Colleges of western Massachusetts, John Garofano teaches international politics at the U.S. Army War College.... In Gloucester, Mass., Steven Gillespie is medical director at Bay Ridge Hospital.... Scarlett Halsted Carey and family have moved from Boston to Cincinnati.... Now living in Texas, Scott Hoyt is an economist for J.C. Penney just outside Dallas.... In addition to her ongoing volunteer work, Martha Huckman Celentano works part time as dental assistant, lab technician, and purchasing agent for two orthodontists in Avon, Conn.... Christopher Jennings has relocated to Jefferson City, Mo., where he is the state's tourism director.... Tim Kane is the associate vice president for advancement at the Maine College of Art.... After many years of night classes, Ruth Lemont Cook received a master's in taxation from Florida Atlantic Univ.... Kelly MacDonald Baumgartner and family have relocated from Vermont to the warmer climate of Virginia.... In the fall, Jon Marcus's book, Boston: Living History, will be in bookstores. After working in the Boston bureau of the Associated Press for several years, Jon recently accepted a position as senior editor with Boston Magazine.... Mark Murray-Brown has moved back to New England, where he enjoys saving bluefin tuna with the National Marine Fisheries Service.... Lori Norman Campbell is director of a respite program for people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.... In Rutland, Vt., Kris Pearson is communications/development director of the not-for-profit NeighborWorks organization. She also coordinates the development of a national alliance of rural community development organizations.... From New Hampshire, Melissa Trace writes that she is delighted to be back in New England after three years in Florida. She works for Intermedia Communications as a sales director.... Catherine Tuxbury has started to work on her M.B.A.... Melissa Weisstuch enjoys her new job as assistant director of marketing, community relations, and health education at Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side.... Reunion in 1998. In Portland, Ore., Krista Anderson just bought a house. After a wonderful trip to Tuscany last summer, she decided to settle down. She is chef de cuisine at Wildwood Restaurant, a work of love that has been very good to her.... Jane Biggs Sanger works at hazardous waste sites, deciding that she is "simply an expensive janitor." She and her husband and two kids are outnumbered by cats, dogs, and 10 puppies.... In Davenport, Iowa, Diana Boucher Boyd's son, Josh, has a genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and liver. He has developed a great sense of independence, however, and uses a walker though doctors said he would never walk. She would love to hear from anyone in her area.... Keith '82 and Laurie Carlson Taylor have finished renovations on their house with larger kitchen, new bedroom, and second bathroom making life easier. She works part time, but may go back to work after the kids are in school. Keith works for an environmental consulting firm in Auburn.... In Massachusetts, physicians Luke and Alice Lueders Daley have moved from Concord to Sandwich. In affiliation with Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, they have started a practice, Cardiovascular and Medical Associates of Sandwich.... Tom Driscoll practices law in Swampscott and occasionally runs into fellow attorney Steve McGuirk. Last summer he went on a golf/fishing trip with "DeFranco and Murph. "... Dave Ehrenthal sold a business he cofounded, The Voyager's Collection, and works for the acquiring company. He is, however, exploring new opportunities with companies involved in the Internet.... Laurel Hayes has earned her Ph.D. in religion and education from Teachers College, Columbia Univ. and Union Theological Seminary.... At Hewlett Packard's Medical Products Group, John Hoyt is involved in market research in Andover, Mass. He earned his M.B.A. at MIT Sloan in 1995.... During Reunion, Andrew Kling was on an exchange program with Moscow Univ. It is part of his new job within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, where he heads three visitor centers and environmental educational center.... "I finally succumbed to my boomer tendencies and bought a house in the 'burbs," says Sue LaLumia, who has left D.C. for Arlington, Va.... In New Jersey, George Liacopulos continues as priest at Holy Trinity Orthodox Christian Church in Egg Harbor Township, where he lives with wife Viola and sons Peter and John.... Former class president Sue MacNeil Varney is grateful for the support of family and many friends and classmates during her battle with cancer. He lives in Naivasha, Kenya, where there is no phone or electricity, and and town water is turned on for about three hours a week. He works with the public health officers at the Ministry of Health on issues of water supply, sanitation, and the like.... At Tucson, Ariz., Laura Murray Montenegro teaches Spanish at a rural high school. She earned her M.Ed. with multicultural bilingual focus in May 1997. Laura enjoys riding her horse "amidst the cacti, coyotes, and rattlesnakes," and says you "should come out West where the view never ends!"... It has been an eventful year for Janice Morford and family. They bought a home outside Philadelphia and are learning about home maintenance and especially enjoy gardening with Gabriel (5). Jan teaches at Bryn Mawr and has seen Doug and Leslie Latady Couper '86, Kim Gilman '84, and classmates Linda Walters and David Wolf.... Richard Nadeau is a senior commercial underwriter for Acadia Insurance Co. in Maine.... In Cumberland Foreside, Sally Nutting Somes is busy with daughter Hannah's activities where she sometimes runs into Vic Otley's wife, Liz (Stark '85) and their daughters. Sally's "big event" last fall was seeing the Rolling Stones!... Congratulations to Colleen O'Connell Jimenez on her promotion to assistant general manager of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. She and her family spent the holidays in New England, a first for her California children, who enjoyed the snow, and they visited Ellen Wilkinson Howard '82, who has "the cutest twins."... Also in California, Jim and Martha Pigott Donelan live in Santa Barbara. He teaches at UC/Santa Barbara and she is director of public relations and membership at the local Trust for Historic Preservation. Martha recently attended the press preview days at the new Getty Museum in Los Angeles.... In her new job as adult services and reference librarian in Faribault, Minn., Valerie Toner has already started two book discussions and cultural programs as well as building an up-to-date reference collection.... Kathleen Tynan Traphagen prefers being a full-time, at- home mom with Allyson after working for 10 years in retail management and systems.... In Madison, Wis., Val Van Metre Litchy says she and husband Dave are logging plenty of bleacher time with their two sons' soccer, basketball, tennis, and swimming. Last summer they were fortunate to visit the East coast and see Peter and Deb Touhey Manus and Laurie Carlson Taylor and family.... From Virginia, Forest Ward had a great vacation on North Captiva Island, Fla., with his wife, two sons, and two teeenage babysitters. He recommends the island: no cars, just golf carts and plenty of fishing.... World traveler Ken Worthy , on his second trip around the world, worked on a computer system in Denmark, went to Japan, Europe, Greece, Egypt, Israel, and India, settling in his second home -- Bali -- for a few months. Now he has to decide whether to work again or go to grad school.... Since Steve Wright's reinsurance company, formed in October 1996, has finally turned the corner, he looks forward to a great 1998. He and Meg (Webb '86) have a year-old daughter.... At Tufts, class president Mary Couillard coordinates the communications effort for a major management training initiative.... And class secretary Leigh Peltier was happy to see the return of winter and ski season. In February, she went skiing in Switzerland, a much-needed vacation from stress. She has had a good year selling insurance to her specialized markets -- lumber yards, machine shops, and fuel oil dealers. It's tough work, but it enables her do do her second love: ski.

Next Reunion in 2001. Last November, Bill Burleigh wrote: "Howdy from the Laramie River Ranch! Our first season is behind us and we are heading into winter, which arrived without much warning. We had 27 inches of snow out of our first storm. With all of the snow in the high country, the elk have moved back into the valley. About 300 head were camped in our driveway this morning. We had a great first season with guests visiting us from across the country (New York to California) and around the world (England and Hong Kong). As most of last summer's guests found us on the Internet, we have updated our web site with many more pictures to give you a better look at our ranch and the vacations guests enjoyed last summer. We took lots of pictures: riding, fishing, tubing down the river, napping at the weekly cookout, and guests generally enjoying themselves. Next Reunion in 2001. The Class was saddened to hear of the sudden death of classmate and friend, Jon Liang, who died Aug. 4, 1997, from a heart attack while playing basketball. He is survived by his wife, Kim, son Elijah, parents and sister.... Brian and Brooke Garrettson Carroll have been "living like nomads" for the past 18 months, finally settling in Belchertown, Mass. Brian has started a two-year program in preservation carpentry at the North Bennett Street School in Boston, and Brooke is the assistant head of the Boston Univ. Residential Charter School. Their summer was busy with a wedding in Anchorage, an Outward Bound trip in Maine for Brian, and toil for Brooke as she worked to establish the new Charter School.... Joe and Kim Finethy Harris enjoyed a very special holiday season celebrating the birth of son Griffin.... Carolyn Himmer Cox is a tax and estate planning attorney in Newton, Mass. She also attends Boston Univ. for her masters in tax, LL.M.... Todd Holbrook recently won a $450,000 verdict for two clients in a contract dispute heard before a federal jury in Concord, N.H. Holbrook, who lives in Falmouth, is a lawyer with the large, Maine-based firm of Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer and Nelson.... From his new home in Burlington, N.C., Maurice Levesque writes that he has a position with the psychology department at Elon College. He enjoys North Carolina, but misses New England. That may change after experiencing his first southern winter.... Rebecca and Peter Wassarman make their home in Atherton, Calif.
