Next Reunion in 2000. Mark Hurvitt of Kingfield and Bates
roommate Brian Carter of Portland, Ore., met in Las Vegas last winter to
run the local marathon. They didn't win, reported Hurvitt, nor did they get
rich at the tables, so they had to go back to their jobs on Monday.... Recently
Daniel Scully became general manager of Boston Magazine after
serving as business manager for four years. Earlier he was district circulation
sales manager for the New York Times Magazine Group. | ||

Next Reunion in 2000. Dick Beers has been named partner in
the Rochester, N.Y., law firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine &
Huber. He focuses on the range of real-estate transactions and financing. Dick
received his J.D. from Syracuse Univ. College of Law. He is a frequent lecturer
on real estate and municipal taxation topics.... Last April, Lillian
Buckley gave her thesis performance of gospel, folk music, and life songs
at Andover Hall Chapel at Harvard Divinity School. Composed and performed by
Lillian, she had Kent Allyn as accompanist with the Imani Temple Church of God
in Christ Choir.... Class president Craig Comins now is director of the
Annual Fund at Radcliffe College. He was associate director of annual giving at
Bates for several years.... In January, Michael Laurence was guest
lecturer at Bates, speaking in the Muskie Archives on "Capital Punishment in
the 21st Century: Marking the Progress of a Civilized Society." An attorney in
San Francisco, Michael is noted for his opposition to the death penalty (see
his essay this issue).... In Washington, D.C., David McNeill is a
commercial officer in the U.S. Department of Commerce/Foreign Commercial
Service. He earned an M.I.M in international business from the American
Graduate School of International Management, Phoenix, Ariz., in 1984. He and
Anne are parents of Natalie (9), Andrew (8), and twins Thomas and Kyle

Next Reunion in 1998. Krista Anderson has settled in
Portland, Ore., and works at a restaurant called Wildwood. She and dog Mickey
left San Francisco to help open the restaurant, but says her biggest itch now
is to travel. She's eyeing New Zealand.... Another classmate on the move
recently was Kathleen Bellucci Van Deursen. Last summer her third child
was born, and Kathleen took a leave of absence and moved to Jackson, N.H. Her
husband is director of mountain operations at Attitash Ski Area, and they are
happy to spend more time skiing and hiking than stressing and commuting....
Nancy Blackburn Sparks and husband Larry had their first baby -- Daniel
Christopher -- in March 1996. Nancy is underwriting regional director for CIGNA
in Bloomfield, Conn.... Also in Connecticut is Tammey Bean Rooney,
husband Tom '81 and two sons. Tammey is home raising the boys and
working on her M.B.A. She also does a lot of volunteering at her sons'
school.... Another classmate in Connecticut is Jan Eklund, who says that
husband Ken Klusnik defended his dissertation and received his Ph.D. in
comparative literature.... Andrea Gelfuso Goetz writes from Colorado
where she had a baby (Alexander) in May 1996. She also has a new job as
litigator for the Department of the Interior. Her clients include the National
Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management, and she specializes in cases
involving oil and gas and CERCLA litigation....In Cape Elizabeth, Julie
Handren Bell has been promoted to adult/young adult librarian at the Thomas
Memorial Library, where she has already set up a special young-adult room. The
new director is Jan Scherma '72, and Julie sees several other Batesie
patrons, including trustee Dick Coughlin '53. She also visited
Joan Fiske Jeter and new daughter Erin (whose dad is Jeff '86),
and frequently runs into Kris Taylor '85 at Portland Symphony Concerts,
where Julie ushers and Kris sells CDs for Amadeus Music for whom she works.
Julie and David are busy with house projects at their new home in Gorham, and
had a special visit with Laird Allan, his wife, and their three children
prior to their move back to Thailand last summer.... George Liacopulos
is serving as a Greek Orthodox priest at the Church of the Holy Trinity in
Egg Harbor Township, N.J. He recently received his Ph.D. from Princeton
Theological Seminary.... In a spring e-mail, Jim Murphy wrote: "My wife
Laurie and I had our second child on April 29. Her name is Claire Montgomery
Murphy. She joins sister Caroline Kip Murphy, who is now 2. Laurie is staying
home full time, having left her job at GE as a senior financial analyst for
plastics. I know her job is much harder now than it ever was; it's certainly
more tiring than mine. I am running for the office of district attorney. My
boss, the DA of 24 years, is stepping down and I announced my candidacy in
January. The election is this fall.... As of last summer, Laura Murray
Montenegro was finishing her master's in bilingual/multicultural education
at Northern Arizona Univ. She is still teaching Spanish at a Tucson high
school, and enjoys riding her horse in her spare time.... Further out West in
Burbank, Calif., Colleen O'Connell Jimenez works as the controller at
the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. She made it to New Hampshire last summer and
says she misses New England, but hopes to make it to the next Reunion....
Finally the Syphlloids got a record deal. Doug Quintal and friends
celebrated their triumph in April 1997 in Boston at their CD release party.
Doug asks us to buy Riding the Corporate Muscle, because if we don't
like it, our kids will.... Also in April 1997, Kathleen Rose bought a
home in Framingham with a great view of the Sudbury River. She recently changed
specialties as a physician assistant to dermatology and loves it. Last summer
she bought a summer home in Provincetown, Mass.... Kathleen Sheehan
DaCunha earned her M.B.A. in marketing from the Univ. of Connecticut in
1992. She is the busy mom of Carolyn (5) and Emily (4).... Megan Shea
and husband Gavin Cook continue to work and live at Choate Rosemary Hall as
English teachers and are deans of the freshman. They had a baby girl -- Emma
Shea Cook -- last summer.... Anita Terpstra is beginning her third year
at St. Louis Univ. Law School, where she is studying bioethics/health law. Last
summer she spent seven weeks in Europe in Rome, Spain, Portugal, and
Morocco.... In Ipswich, Mass., Jennifer Wohlers Bentley has retired from
her job to raise her daughter, Emma. Jennifer says she doesn't miss corporate
life and loves life in her house on the Ipswich River.... In January 1997,
David B. Wolf was ordained an Episcopal priest in the Washington
National Cathedral. He is assistant to the rector at St. Albans Parish in
Washington, D.C. | ||

"Was happy to see the option of e-mailing class news. I am home on maternity
leave for three months since the birth of Henry Andrews Cormier on May 3. He
joins sister Elise (4 1/2) who is thrilled with his arrival (at least for now).
I continue to work at Talbots, where for the last nine years I have held
various marketing positions, the most recent being database marketing -- an
exciting and challenging role." | ||

Next Reunion in 2001. Making movies is a family affair for
Cole '82 and Shannon Banks Tamminen, whose company produced
Phoebe's Farm last October. Shannon produced the tapes and handles sales
and marketing. Cole, who owns his own video production company, was director,
videographer and editor. With the Tamminen children, Phoebe (4) and Conner (2
1/2) as members of the cast, the kids bottle-fed baby goats, collected eggs,
and tickled a pig. "We wanted quality video programming for our kids, but were
disappointed with what we found on the market," she says. So, with
encouragement of friends, they went ahead. Part of the proceeds goes to
agencies working to prevent child abuse.... Doug and Jennifer
Smalley Kaufman '88 have been living in Dover, N.H., while Doug is halfway
through his Ph.D. in reading and writing instruction at Univ. of New Hampshire,
and Jennifer is manager of environmental programs at the Environmental Hazards
Management Institute, an environmental nonprofit. | ||

writes: "I'm now living in Kennebunk and am still an at-home mom. The biggest
change is now I'm the mom of Renee (6), Ben (4), and Tessa (1). I spend most of
my day running the mom taxi. In my spare time, I provide administrative
assistance to my husband's electrical company. Have been keeping in touch with
Dina Hill '87 in New Mexico. Have jumped into cyberspace, e-mail address

Next Reunion in 1997. In Boston, Robert Donahue Jr. is a
stockbroker at Hoenig & Co. He and Deborah live in Newtonville, and she is
a stock/equity trader at Boston Partners Asset Management.... In March,
Chris Lamberg-Karlovsky, an M.F.A. student at the School of the Museum
of Fine Arts in Boston, won one of three 1997 Dana Pond Prizes for Painting.
The competition honors the "most meritorious" work during the school's academic
