Co-Class Presidents: Wilfred and Melissa Meigs Barbeau, 1 Grove St., Barrington, RI 02806-1921

Next Reunion in 1997. Your Class Secretary is too modest to send us the article, "Quintessential Quimby," from her local paper. Thanks to our clipping service, we include the following excerpt: "The stereotypical librarian is usually shown as an ill-tempered, conservatively dressed spinster who rules her library with an iron fist and constant `shushing.' Apparently no one ever told Unity College's head librarian, Dot Quimby, about this kind of role model." So wrote Jason Johnson in The Republican Journal of June 1. We might add that our other Bates graduates who are librarians do not fit that stereotype either! Dot has built up the library from a single room in 1976 to a building used by college and townspeople alike. She says she's probably the noisiest person there. Dot keeps track of alumni, is a surrogate mother to homesick students, and has found time to serve on local committees, to say nothing of climbing Mt. Katahdin and Mt. Washington, rappelling down a cliff, and canoeing the Penobscot River. We reported earlier her honorary degree from Unity College in 1985. This year the Trustees have named her professional home the Dorothy Webb Quimby Library. We congratulate her!

Next Reunion in 2000. In Lewiston Roscoe Fales is "still happily practicing law with no intention of retiring." He's enjoying family, especially son Thomas, nine, with "passing the old football around," a new tree house, baseball cards.... From Hong Kong, Dwight "Gimp" Harvie sends greetings and a couple of great photos from Reunion. The Harvies traveled with their daughter to New England last June to look at colleges, Bates included. Gimp maintains his Maine roots with a place "down to" East Boothbay.... Since retiring in 1988 after thirty years with Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co., Frank Hine has been a consultant two days a week for his former employer. He has retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve with the rank of Commander. Frank volunteered as the coordinator for New Britain's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, an organization that completes federal and state tax returns for low-income and retired persons. Frank and Noreen plan to continue to live in their Wethersfield, Connecticut, home as empty-nesters. Children David '78, Priscilla, and Steven live within twenty miles of the family and "bring much joy to the old folks."...Our other Hong Kong resident, Dick Melville, reports a Christmas home leave to their new Damariscotta, Maine, farm with a cozy house and a large barn. The whole family made it for the holidays and "Mel" even managed to get a new barn floor laid down. Back home, Dick continues as an investment counsel with his firm, Melville Associates, providing advice and guidance to the People's Republic of China, the private sector development programme of the United Nations, and others.... Looking for a house in the Duxbury, Massachusetts, area? Marilyn Skelton Patch is putting her house on the market and it's a "no-fun job." She has lived there for twenty-seven years. She has also spent time on Deer Isle for thirty-three years.... And for those of you who are looking for Bob Sharaf, he's still on Marco Island, Florida, but headed for 11 Rue St. Yves in Paris from June through October. Pretty tough duty for Bob, who will use Paris as a base for bicycle touring in Europe. Then it's back to the rigors of Marco.... Imagine Marilyn Winslow Dean's surprise when she received the winter issue of the alumni magazine and recognized her family, William and Ann Wymore Dean '79, entering the new ice arena with children Brian and Kimberly!
