Chad Knowlton, who lives in Sun City, Arizona, would love to hear from classmates or have them visit him at 9916 Kingswood Circle, 85351. He misses the rocky coast of Maine and the salt water.

In February Vin '33 and Verna Brackett Kirby and their visitor, Ruth Carter Zervas, attended the Southwest Florida Bates Club in Punta Gorda. They enjoyed meeting Ed and Ruth Benham Wilmot '33, who came up from Fort Myers. On Sunday Tom Musgrave and a friend joined them for dinner at a local restaurant.... In October 1994 Bob Butler attended the Portland, Maine, wedding of his grandson, Rob '88. Last winter he spent two weeks in Lake Worth, Florida, with his daughter, Betsy '67, and her husband, celebrating her birthday with a day cruise to the Bahamas. Bob also visited Epcot and witnessed the launching of Shuttle Endeavor.... Ruth Carter Zervas spent much of the winter with sewing projects -- she made two long mohair and wool jackets with matching hats for her daughter and herself, and a wool suit for her daughter. She also took a trip to Florida.... Now living in a fine retirement home in Hartford, Connecticut, Gladys and Bernard Drew attend the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, where Bernard was pastor for fifty-four years. For the longest pastorate in the church's 130-year history, the Drews were given a standing ovation.... On March 30 Jackie and Ed Lelyveld attended the Northern California Bates meeting in Burlingame and heard President Harward talk on Bates and its future.... While wintering in Boca Raton, Florida, Georgette Lepage enjoyed attending plays and flower and art shows, and seeing family and friends. Visits included meeting twice with Verna Geddes Morison and her sister, Hazel. Verna, who has sold her Florida and Massachusetts homes, now lives in a retirement home in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she is near her children.... Helen Goodwin Yeagle has thirty music pupils. A member of various churches in the area, she often sings in their choirs. She attends a church in Leicester, Massachusetts, belongs to a singing group that visits a nursing home, and has promoted community concerts in nearby Putnam, Connecticut.... On St. Patrick's Day, the people of Augusta honored Dan Hickey with a celebration. The mayor named March 17 "Dan Hickey Day" to thank him for all his service to local people when he was a postal carrier, postmaster, city councilor, and Maine state legislator, as well as an active member of his church, and a major supporter of youth hockey. Dan's wife, Rita Brown Hickey '36, enjoyed the proceedings also.... In August 1994, Louise Mallinson Jagger went to Russia with friends. She saw much of the countryside from a cruise ship sailing from St. Petersburg to Moscow, and was much impressed by the Hermitage and Kremlin treasures. In May she went to England on a guided tour, traveling by coach.... From May 17 to 26, Frank Murray was in Seoul, Korea, as a delegate to the Global Consultations on World Evangelization by the Year 2000.... Tom Musgrave keeps in touch with Sumner Raymond and says that Sumner would like to hear from classmates.... In November 1994, Doris Neilson Whipple went on a European trip. She traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, in April; attended her grandson's graduation in Boulder, Colorado, in May; and this June was in Chicago for some sightseeing.... Inspired by Pierre Barton's book The Impossible Railroad, Donald M. Smith took a rail trip across Canada. Our sympathy goes to Donald and Eda (Osano '36) on the loss of their daughter and only child.... We learned only recently of the death of Miriam Wheeler on June 11. During the winter she had enjoyed playing a lot of duplicate bridge at the Women's Literary Union.... Toby Zahn Griffiths has finished another two-year term as president of the Oxford County Teachers Association. She is also on the board of the State Retired Teachers Association, is active in her church, and is a volunteer at the Casco Library.

In addition to his work in building up and maintaining South County Museum, he is cited for his tenure as history professor at the University of Rhode Island, having established chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta (an American history honors society) before his 1982 retirement. He continues to be active in his church and local and state organizations. Former University president Rudi Hempe describes Bill as "a sweetheart of a guy...he commands a certain amount of respect," a learned man but one who isn't afraid of a difficult job. A testimonial dinner for Bill is planned for fall.
