I live in the city of Malmoe and wait impatiently for the June completion of the bridge that will connect Malmoe to Copenhagen. Amy Kuemmerle Mazeran '91 and husband Jacques had their second baby, Laszlo Mazeran, on May 23, 1999. The Mazerans continue living at Ware, a town one hour north of London."... Christy Porter (porter.299@osu.edu) writes: "In addition to my Ph.D. in psychology from UNH in September, I also earned an M.S. in college teaching from UNH's Program in Teaching Excellence (yeah!). My thanks to Professor John Kelsey for serving on my dissertation committee. My significant other, Josh Burk, and I have taken postdoc position in the Department of Neuroscience at the Ohio State Univ., working on models of Alzheimer's disease and the changes in neurotransmitters and cognition in aged rats."

School of Medicine in 1996. His wife, Dawn, graduated from Univ.S Calif in 1989 and is a medical student at Tufts. He and Dawn were married June 12, 1994.... Estelle Lebeau (lebea1el@mail.cmich.edu) writes: "I graduated with a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Univ. of North Carolina about a year and a half ago. From there I went to Johns Hopkins as a post-doctoral fellow and instructor of chemistry. The work was fun, but I am just not a city girl. I am finally into something more permanent now (which feels very good), having joined the chemistry faculty at Central Michigan Univ. I enjoy being on this side of the desk, and the pace of life in Mount Pleasant reminds me a lot of our lives in Lewiston. I guess I will have to get used to snow again here in Michigan, not having seen much of it since leaving Bates, so this winter will be a shocker I'm sure. If any Batesies are ever in the the middle of Michigan, they are more than welcome to stop by."

Tim, previously the varsity coach at Walpole High School, holds a master's degree from Suffolk, where he served as a graduate fellow in the athletic department. "He has become a good student of the game," Suffolk athletic director Jim Nelson told the Walpole Times. "I don't want to use the hackneyed phrase 'stepping stone,' but I would not be surprised to see him as an assistant at a Division II or Division I school and eventually become a head coach at one of the three levels."... Eric Douglas (edouglas@bnkst.edu) writes: "I recently began working as the annual giving manager at the Bank Street College of Education in New York City, where classmate Ali Weisman teaches in the School for Children and Stacie Renfro '94 works in the library."... Andrew Kang is an associate in the Professional Practices Group at Burns &;Levinson, LLP, in Boston, Mass. Andrew received his J.D. from Boston College Law School.... The National Dance Assn. awarded Alison Oakes the Graduate Student Literary Award for a literary paper she submitted based on her master's thesis. She wrote about her belief in the transformative effect of dance and its role in the creative learning experience in the classroom. In New York City, she works to integrate arts education into curricula of elementary and middle schools. She earned her master's in dance and dance education last May, continuing her work at Iona College, where she teaches courses about integrating dance in the classroom.... Larissa Vigue spent six weeks at Oxford last summer completing her fourth summer of work toward her master's degree in English literature through Middlebury's Bread Loaf School of English. After Oxford, Larissa planned to return to her home state of Maine to begin a second master's degree, in American and New England studies, at USM, where she hopes to begin work on a book about her grandfather's life in early 20th-century New England. In addition to working at Champlain College in Burlington, Vt., for the past five years, Larissa has built up a small free-lance writing business and plans to continue her that work while attending school in Maine.

I spend a great deal of time outdoors with my friends and keep in touch with several Batesies. I am also enjoying the time I spend with my family, particularly my newborn nephew, Andrew. "... "Every painting is a personal trip," he said of his work. "It's a journey, I would hope, toward self-awareness.".... Lauren Popell (lpopell@leland.stanford.edu) is in the second year of Stanford's master's program in documentary film/video production, graduating in June. "I also teach a public speaking class at Stanford and am the coordinator of the Graduate Women's Network."... A Hebron Academy math teacher, Tobin White received a Klingenstein Fellowship award last summer at the Klingenstein Center for Independent School Education at Teachers College, Columbia Univ. As one of 50 recipients nationwide, he explored teaching styles, educational philosophies and issues, and personal development. Toby has a master's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and is co-chair of the math department at Hebron and coach of the swimming team. He has also directed the English as a Second Language Program and, through two consecutive grants, has developed mathematics curriculum in the Hebron Academy Upper School.

Greg Arata finished an off-Broadway Shakespeare musical and spent the summer with summer stock in Montclair, N.J., before taking on a promotional gig as "Bunker Bob" for Homepoint.com (check the site: http://bunkerbob.homepoint.com/contactbob/index.html). He was in a film, Los Enchiladas, that played at the Sundance Film Festival.... Amanda Barney reports that everything is well on the east end of Long Island. She and husband Matthew Orr '94 enjoy raising son Oliver, now 2, who starts nursery school this September. Amanda is a high school English teacher in Mattituck.... David Brunelli plays volleyball, hockey, skis and snowboards in Colorado.... Since 1996 Sacha Bulted has taught eighth grade Spanish at Kiley Middle School in Springfield, Mass. During the summer she worked at Camp Cromwell in Bound Brook as a Spanish and computer teacher for sixth- and eighth-grade boys as part of New York Boys Club Education Program.... After a year-and-a-half as a research technician at Boston Medical Center, Sarah Carter returned to Minneapolis for grad school. Her advisor, Russ Johnson, also was advisor to Bates biology lecturer Karen Palin. Small world!... Surviving her first year of law school, Jessica Christie misses living in D.C. and seeing Ruby Shamir, but she does enjoy the Philadelphia area.... Sarah Coulter looked forward to presenting some of her work this fall at the National AVS conference in Seattle. She has received a fellowship towards her Ph.D.... Mark Erelli won the New Folk Award at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. Previous winners have included Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith. Mark, who recently released a self-titled CD on the Valley's Signature Sounds label, is also working on a master's degree in biology at UMass-Amherst.... Randy Fernandez is studying for the Florida bar and plans to practice in the South Florida area.... After Rachel Fleischmann takes the Illinois bar exam she will spend three weeks in Europe. In the fall she moved to Chicago to work with children in foster care. "I am very happy that law school is over and I am excited to move and begin working with children again."... Brandy Gibbs works as a graphic designer in the marketing department of Bain &;Co Inc.... Ben Godin writes: "After two-and-a-half years in college admissions, I decided to give the corporate world a try and took a job as a university relations specialist at EMMC, a high-tech company in Hopkinton, Mass." He moved to lovely Central Square in Cambridge, enjoys favorite clubs and pubs, and plays in a local band, Moonshot, with Karen Little and Jim Theodore, both '97.... Living in Steamboat Springs since 1996, Tasha Heath is the proud owner of a two-bedroom condo ("where doors are always open for those of you traveling west"). She manages the only bookstore in Steamboat and has become a real bookworm. After work she rides the hills, takes a long run, or relaxes by the river. During the summer she trained throughout Colorado to compete in races: "Actually trained for a Triathlon in August." She loves the mountains but misses the beautiful fall foliage and Eastern seashore.... Catherine Hepp worked for six months in a Washington, D.C., law firm. Before going to grad school, she also spent over a year working at a residential treatment program for adolescents in Pittsfield, Mass., a job she liked.... Since graduation, Hilary Holbrook has worked for National Economic Research Associates in Cambridge, Mass. First she did environmental policy research. Since then she has been involved in antitrust research, working long hours on the Department of Justice's law suit against Microsoft....Christopher Holmes (Christopher_Holmes@brown.edu) and Katherine Michalewich are engaged to be married, with their wedding to take place on October 15, 2000, in Bolyston, Mass. Katie is a fourth-year medical student at the Univ. of Massachusetts and is in the process of applying to residency programs, and preparing for the second step of the USMLE ("a big *&%^^$;test," reports Chris). Katie and Chris recently traveled to London, Edinburgh, and Paris to celebrate their engagement. "Paris was romantic, with strolling by the Seine and unfathomable amounts of butter, cheese, and phatty pastries," writes Chris. "London was theater-saturated (saw two outstanding shows: Copenhagen and The Weir). Edinburgh was not quite the hallucinogenic hell as depicted in Trainspotting - we caught pieces of the theater, film, book, and jazz festivals that dominate this wonderful medieval city during the month of August. I just started a master's program in English at Brown. Professors are lovely here in Providence, but I miss the intimacy of the Bates classroom. While very challenging, the Brown program is altogether enjoyable - plenty of new friends and good restaurants to explore. I keep in touch with Greg Arata via the Internet. He has taken on the persona of "Bunker Bob" for Homepoint.com, and travels the country in a glass tractor trailer (no really!). Bunker Bob has a theme ballad, tee-shirts with his handsome caricature, and an e-mail address where all Bates friends can make contact.... After graduation, Erika Jones worked at an environmental center in northern Minnesota and got a post-baccalaureate degree in outdoor education. Moving first to Colorado, then to California, she traveled through Chile and Baja, and now works for an outdoor education company. She leads trips all over California - rock climbing and sea kayaking, for example - for schools. Last summer she led trips for high school students in Costa Rica, returning to California in the fall.... Jordan Kobert is a media consultant with Harding Ankarlo designALLIANCE.... Jennifer Lucas is a project coordinator in the product development group at a design consultancy in Boston. At a local bar in Cambridge, she had a chance to hang out with Julie MacGregor, catching up on the "good ole days."... In New York City Cara Malarek is a geriatric social worker. She provides case management services for the mentally ill and frail elderly residents of the West 74th Street Adult Home on the Upper West Side.... Nancy Monahan works for the Natick (Mass.) Visiting Nurses Assn. and is busy preparing for her family nurse practitioner exam.... Karen Lecomte says, "Old lady becomes young doctor, May 2000." She sends best wishes to all her classmates.... Martin Piech says he is still ballroom dancing along with his grad work in chemical engineering.... Brent Radcliffe is very happily working for MFS Investment Management on a sales desk. "Love Boston!"... Barbara Raths says, "I have crossed paths with many great Bates Democrats (and Republicans) while serving as the executive director of the Maine Democratic Party. Tamara Bucknell Pogue '99, Neil Jamieson '83, Tom Connolly '79, Frank Coffin '40, Bob Bouldry, Susan Farnsworth '89, Elaine Makas '67, and I apparently ate something in Commons while we were at Bates that made us want to spend countless hours working to elect Democrats in Maine!... Melissa Roan writes, "Outside of grad scool (who has time for a life outside of grad school?! ), I got my black belt last December."... Matt Robinson - software developer, teacher, and author specializing in the Java programming language - is co-author Swing, aimed at intermediate to advanced Java developers. Living in Palo Alto, Calif., he has also written a monthly column for Sun's online Swing journal called "Tips and Tricks." He contributed to Ready-to-Run Java3D and worked for a Silicon Valley startup doing collaborative Web-based CAD review software with support from Sun.... Dave Rosenberg is a high school special ed teacher and football coach and lives in Beverly, Mass.... Emily Jackson '94 and James Sanborn love living in Chapel Hill, N.C.. While in Maine for Emily's 5th Reunion, they visited family, stopped in Newport, R.I., for the wedding of classmate Myla Pozienza and Andrew Ross '99. Emily teaches fourth grade.... In Boulder, Colo., Jessica Sutton is recovering from grad school and planning her August wedding. Jack Caughey works the graveyard shift at the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless and rock climbs during the day. They see several other Batesies in the area ... Sara Tichenor White works for Energy Dispersive Spectrocopy Co. out of New Jersey. The job includes lots of travel nationally and overseas including Japan, Germany, and Singpore. Husband Jon '97 works for Marymount Univ. as admissions counselor.... Jennie Sue Walsh works in Columbus, Ohio, and takes classes for an elementary teaching certificate.... Magill Weber, a graduate student in ornithology, was doing research on Atlantic puffins off the coast of Maine this summer.... Since leaving Bates, Alexander Zimmerman has traveled considerably from Maine to St Croix, Tennessee, Turkmenistan, New York, and Pittsburgh. He reports several experiences along the way while finding time for grad school. Tap out a note to magazine@bates.edu Stefan Belinfanti is studying law at Fordham and says that his transition to New York City has been made smoother by a strong core of fellow Batesies such as Whitney MacDonald, Larry Ackerman, Jeremy Villano and Ellen Lazarus, to name a few. Stefan's brother Aaron '94 lives in the city as well. Stefan loves New York but comments that it is no LA (Lewiston-Auburn).... Deborah Bernat works at NECX (www.necx.com) helping to maintain their Web site both graphically and structurally. "We won 'Best of the Web' from both PC Magazine and U.S. News &;World Report, so if you need computer hardware, software, or other electronic gadgets, check us out!"... Last August Dawn Anne Bilodeau began work as an educational specialist at the U.S. Army's education division. She earned her master's in educational administration at Arizona State-Tempe in 1999.... Kip Coonley, an M.S. student in electrical engineering at the Thayer School, sent a clip from one of the school's brochures featuring some of the work that he has been doing on the development of light-weight, high-efficiency power converters.... Sharleen Davis is serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco. After her training this summer, she will be working as a hygiene and water sanitation educator.... Madhur Duggar writes that he is almost at the end of a two-year analyst program at Lehman Brothers in their Investment Banking Group. Madhur is considering a Ph.D. program in finance. He lives in Hoboken, N.J.... Kevin Finn is living in Bethesda, Md.... Jeb Fowler writes: "I work at the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge. I help to organize a team that runs in the Boston Marathon to raise money for cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. I am also organizing a fall row for cancer on the Charles."... Jill Glazewski (nasti_ass@hotmail.com) received her master's in public health from Tulane last December and is finishing her first year at Flinders Univ. School of Medicine in Adelaide, Australia.... Sarah Hallowell has moved to Washington D.C., where she is working in the development office at the Maret School.... Kara Jackson is serving her second year in the South Pacific teaching math at a secondary school. She says that she is having an amazing experience so far: "Vanuatu is rich with culture and custom, and has so much to offer. The time here has gone by extremely fast!"... As of last spring, Erin Matlack was living in North Attleboro, Mass., with her fiancé and looking forward to her September 1999 wedding. Erin has received her Massachusetts real estate license and is working as an agent for Southgate Realty in Raynham, Mass. Her husband-to-be, James McKay, works for EMC2 (a computer firm). Erin writes that they are happy, excited and busy.... Steven Ockerbloom was looking forward to a September 1999 wedding to Alexandra Logan in Norfolk, Conn.
