Tap out a note to magazine@bates.edu John and Sue Kimball Adams, both retired from teaching, enjoy some travel and their vacation house on the Cape where their family gathers. They visited daughter Katherine '89 and her husband in Seattle. In Santa Fe, Sue sang in Brahms' "German Requiem" with 200 chorus members from all over the country. She also volunteers on the board of the Literacy Project.... In Washington, D.C., Sally Benson works with the Asian Pacific Center for Justice and Peace and was an election observer in Cambodia last year. Daughter Lauren '00 is a marine biology major and captains the women's rugby team.... Son Philip has entered Ralph Bixler's insurance brokerage business in Santurce, Puerto Rico. They visited Valarie Clark in Holland last year and last summer he and his wife planned a trip up the Maine coast including a stop at Bates.... Betty Bonnar Kepner and her husband celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in Lima, Peru, in 1998. They spent two months in Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru. The highlights of their trip were at Machu Pichu, Peru, as well as a Spanish language school in Quito, Ecuador.... Jim Carignan was elected to the Lewiston City Council and also is chairman of the board at St. Mary's Hospital.... After 17 years in the Netherlands, Valarie Clark's business is well established and she loves her funny old house which she bought three years ago. All three "kids" were together for Christmas last year. Adam and family are in Amsterdam. Tiffany and her family live in a suburb of Amsterdam, while Willow lives outside of Florence with her family.... Still in Tucson, Barbara Cressy Rosano sends wonderful wishes.... Peter and Emily Dore Fletcher have finished their 75-acre homesteading effort begun 27 years ago. She hoped to begin a small bed and breakfast last fall. They also have a registered herd of Black Angus cattle. For 15 years Emily has been with Bank of New Hampshire, where she is involved in commercial lending. Also she is a trustee at Memorial Hospital, Mount Washington Valley Medical Center.... Last spring George Drury led tours for the Society of International Railway Travelers to New Zealand and Switzerland, and in the fall toured eastern Germany, Wales and the Isle of Man. "About the time of Celebrate Bates! weekend in October, I'll be ushering everyone aboard the dining car of the Severn Valley Railway at Kidderminster for our farewell dinner," he wrote. George has published "Railfan" guidebooks including Britain-Ireland, Germany, and Austria. George has plans for rail tours of Austria, Switzerland, Canadian Rockies and South Africa in 2000. He says he works harder than in the corporate world, is busier and his mind is more active.... Since February 1990, on the Big Island Gail Emerson has operated her own physical therapy clinic, Mauna Kea, which means "mountain white," because they do get snow on top of the mountain in winter. She hopes to continue for two more years if her hands hold out and if she can survive the insurance companies who try to delay payments and cut back sessions. She and Ray return to New Hampshire in the fall to visit family, friends, and see the foliage.... Jane and Steve Garvin have moved back to Acton. He still works three days a week at Peoples Heritage Bank in Portland. Jane tutors privately at the Scarboro Learning Center.... Since he retired from Dickinson College in June 1997, Jack Henderson has spent two years as a consultant and articles editor for the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and as Web master for them. Wife Mary Jane retired last June and they have moved back to Maine, winterizing their summer house in Phippsburg (including a hot tub!) and already are involved with local volunteer activities.... Dave and Sue Kittredge Barnard planned an Amtrak trip last summer to Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada, and then down the coast of California as far as Monterey. There planned to see Dick and Gisela Van Bree, who will venture north from the LA area to meet them.... After working 15 years for Duracell in Connecticut, Diane Lynch Izzo was transferred to Boston. She lives in Foxborough and works in the Prudential Center.... In 1997 John Marino married Joyce Brugman Torns, a music teacher in Manchester, Conn. They honeymooned in France which brought back John's memories of the summer of 1961, when Bates sent him there. He's been a Francophile ever since.... Research articles continue to be fun for Mary Morton Cowan to write. She did a feature on the northernmost school in North America, located in the new province of Nunavut, Canada. She used e-mail to correspond with the teachers, who are fluent in English, but the students are not, so she faxed them notes since she doesn't know Inuktitut. Mary learned a lot doing that article!... Enjoying life in the Alaskan Bush is Royce Purinton. He and his wife live 303 air miles due west of Fairbanks on the Yukon River, where he works as a traveling telephone tech. One daughter is a teacher aide in the Nulato school, which is where they live. Their other daughter recently had her second child and they are enjoying being grandparents.... Marcia Putnam O'Shea tutors math part time at the Fay School in Southborough, Mass. Husband Skip has retired so they can enjoy their three granddaughters and her 90-year-old father who lives with them. Marcia knits kid sweaters, and she and Skip enjoy snorkeling in Bonaire each March.... Joan Scott Candelmo writes and illustrates children's books, with three soon to be published. Phil '60 has written his memoirs, Shifting Tides, probably now in your bookstore. Both daughters (Terri '84 Laurie '85) and three grandchildren live nearby.... Jerry and Gretchen Shorter Davis have had some great Elderhostel experiences both in the U.S. and abroad in Prince Edward Island and Austria.... Bill and Carol Sisson Vose are restoring a colonial home in need of many repairs that they bought in New Durham, N.H. Historically it was a tavern in the 1790's and was home of the town's first library, so they are restoring the parlor for their own library with space for their collection of antiquarian books. Conjure up the Blue Goose with Coram overtones!... Carol Smith has moved to Salinas, Calif. She teaches the children of fieldworkers in Ce'sar Cha'vez School. Spanish mornings, English afternoons.... Joyce Stinson Cote still works as the executive secretary for the Hartford Dental Society and is moderator and head deaconess of her church. Husband Gayland retired from UTC but works for IBM as a computer tech. They both plan to retire in a few years and visit their children.... Laurie Sunderland Sutherland writes of the many honors and awards given in Jim's memory for his leadership in and around the Meredith/Moultonboro area. One of the best is from her town and Meredith Village Savings Bank, who are creating the James D. Sutherland Memorial Park on Route 25. The lovely location overlooks Berry Pond, Mt. Chocorua, and the Presidential range. The Memorial Scholarhip gives up to $2,000 to a student in each of four towns that have a branch of MVSB. Laurie enjoys two grandsons, children of daughter Julie '88 and Halsey Platt '88.... Last September in France, Tom and Joan Turner Derrenbacker biked through the Loire Valley with an Elderhostel group. Joan teaches several Bible study groups and works with MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers). Four grandchildren live nearby.... Richard Van Bree's computer business is still very robust. He and Gisela were to meet Dave and Sue Kittredge Barnard in Monterery, Calf., last fall. He is in daily e-mail contact with Royce Purinton, who has lived in Nulato, Alaska, for 25 years.... After stints in Amarillo, Texas, and Richland, Wash., Deb and Dick Watkins moved back to Idaho Falls where he will be at Bechtel, Babcock and Wilcox as vice president for environment, safety, health, and quality assurance.... For 14 years Bill Wheeler has worked in his consulting practice.... After 37 years as a sports writer and editor, Dick Yerg retired in 1998. He spent four years with the Hackensack (N.J.) Record, and 33 for The Journal News in Rockland and Westchester counties. After covering the New York Rangers for 19 years, he especially enjoyed writing about scholastic sports. In May he was inducted into the Rockland County (N.Y.) Sports Hall of Fame. Since he worked at night most of those 37 years, he has had to readjust to free time at night and daytime work with tennis and bicycling.... Dick Van Bree is trying to get semi-retired, but the computer consulting business and Internet hosting keep him very busy. He and Gisela enjoy trips down the Baja peninsula and are already planning to join all of us at the 40th Reunion.... The class is saddened by news of Bob Viles' death. He and wife Bruce were vacationing in France and he drowned while swimming off the coast of Brittany. His obituary is in this issue.... F. Channing Wagg has had three short stories published and is writing more. He attended a week long writers conference at Colgate last summer. He is still involved with human resource contracts and also works part time at another job. He and Sara planned a fall trip to Europe and are excited about the news that they will become grandparents.

In his spare time he has worked as overall director of aid stations for the Honolulu Marathon, one of the three largest in the world. He also sings with a men's chorus, which performs in New Zealand and California.... Donald Morton is the activities and alumni coordinator at the International School of Amsterdam (www.isa.nl) in the Netherlands, where he previously taught history, English, and the theory of knowledge. He also has translated academic books and articles in philosophy and history from Dutch into English.

Next Reunion in 2003. Got news? Tap out a note to magazine@bates.edu Ending a 28-year teaching career, Ruth Raymond Kapnis retired in June and was named the Teacher of the Year by the Salem (Mass.) Rotary Club. She was like a second mom to generations of kids as a favorite elementary and middle school teacher in Salem public schools. "I always wanted to be a teacher," said Ruth, who taught fourth grade at the Bates School. Earlier she taught first and second grades. One of seven children of Miriam and Sumner Raymond '34, she met head on with her own combined family of 11 children, now grown, and has 17 grandchildren as well. Along with supervising the assembly line of preparing school lunches, sports schedules, household chores, Ruth usually managed a 5 a.m. one-mile swim at the Salem YMCA. In a June 27 Boston Globe feature, the Bates School principal said, "In the field of education, she was a true role model. She represents the finest there is in the business of education." Congratulations, Ruth!

He was a stallwart of the Outing Club, of which I was a faculty adviser along with Professor of Mathematics Dick Sampson."

Tap out a note to magazine@bates.edu Mary Williams-Norton, professor of physics at Ripon College, was recently named the college's May Bumby Severy Distinguished Service Professor.The professorship recognizes excellence in teaching and honors Mary's efforts to improve science education statewide in Wisconsin, sharing her insight of the sciences to hundreds of elementary school teachers and children.She has co-directed the Wisconsin High School Science Olympiad since 1985, developed a family home science activities program, and is active in Visitors in Science Investigating Together, a project that brings working scientists into classrooms from kindergarten to the fourth grade.
