Since she moved to Tucson, Arizona, in 1991, Sarah Foster Smith, a member of a writing group, helped with the group's self-published anthology and wrote a humorous article for a local publication. Last September she began work as an editorial assistant at Fisher Books, a publisher of cookbooks, self-help books, and "a very successful book on pregnancy." Sarah is also a free-lance proofreader for a textbook publisher, Zephyr Press. Accompanist for the Foothills Women's Chorus and several vocalists, she also sings in her church choir... Congratulations to Glastonbury High School math teacher Carl Peterson, chosen Coach of the Year in indoor track by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association. Criteria for the nomination include "coaching ethics and professionalism, esteem by colleagues." For thirty years Carl has fielded excellent teams and coached outstanding athletes in boys' cross-country, indoor and outdoor track. In recent years, girls also participate in the school's track and field sports by event rather than in single-sex teams.

Bill and Penny Barbour Obenshain visited France where their twin sons studied at the University of Toulouse during their JYA from Dartmouth. It was fun to explore a new region of France and to visit with the twins' French family... Nick Basbanes says his weekly column is now syndicated in twenty-two newspapers...and growing. His book, A Gentle Madness, will be published in August by Henry Holt & Co. Nick says he will be at the Thirtieth Reunion and we should all start planning now so that it is the biggest yet!... Carol Blaisdell Slauenwhite writes, "Treating patients sure beats being a patient!" Still recovering from a work injury, she has not been able to return to her physical therapy private practice as yet... After living in Minneapolis for twenty-six years, Emily Blowen Brown and her family have moved to Duluth. They miss their friends but love Lake Superior. She interprets and teaches sign language to a deaf child in a Head Start program... Tom Bowditch completed his master's degree at the University of Virginia last May and has decided to stay on for his Ph.D. degree. While going to school, he is consulting at the Center for Naval Analyses, and still does rock climbing and mountaineering. They have bought a home in Charlottesville and live around the corner from Judy Morris Edwards. Spending the summer in Maine at Lake Sebago, they encourage friends to visit... After her year at Bates serving as interim chaplain, Karen Brown Johnson returned to her home in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She is managing director of the Community Ministries of Rockville, Inc., a coalition of seventeen churches and the Jesuit community of Georgetown Preparatory School. The small, nonprofit organization operates community-service programs and undertakes advocacy for and with those in greatest need... Having completed his term as chair of the Annual Alumni Fund Committee, Jim Callahan says, "I won't be begging my classmates...much, but the College could sure use our continued support."... Ken Child continues as the director of development at Boston University School of Theology, and Pam still sells real estate. Their daughter, Meredith, graduates from Bates this spring... Newt Clark enjoys his work in the West Hartford public schools as director of continuing and summer education. Patricia (Lord '67) is head librarian at Miss Porter's School where Abby is a senior. Last year Newt and family took his eighty-two-year-old mother to France and visited with daughter Sarah '95 who was then on her Junior Year Abroad... In July 1994 Linda Cummings Messer spent three weeks in Ireland, partly to participate in Reality Therapy and Control Theory training for certification. She and husband Paul enjoyed touring and were impressed with the friendly and hospitable Irish people... Ted Davis has taught at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, for twenty-eight years. He still coaches football (1994 League champs) and wrestling. One daughter has made him a grandfather twice, another is in a marine science Ph.D. program in Miami, and the eldest daughter just eloped--"great for bank account," he says... In San Jose, California, Ralph Day teaches C++ at Masters Institute. Last summer he vacationed in Norway, Sweden, and the Czech Republic... After twenty-two years in Guilford, Connecticut, Jane and Tom Fox have moved to a smaller house on the water in Niantic. In his new assignment as manager of motor vehicles at Southern New England Telephone, he manages a fleet of 2,800 vehicles. "I feel like a kid with a bunch of new toys," he says. Son Peter works for Sprint and Steven works for the Boston Herald... Bill Gosling is assistant director for technical services and library systems at the University of Michigan Library. He writes, "I have finally completed, after a thirteen-year period of preparation, Canadiana in United States Repositories: A Preliminary Guide, published by Dalhousie University School of Library and Information Studies in its Occasional Paper Series. A great relief to have this done." He goes on to note that work is challenging and rewarding as they try to keep up with technology upgrades and new information products in electronic format. "We are heavily engaged at the University of Michigan creating our version of the Digital Library." The Goslings are landscaping their new home, and report that son William is driving!...Major changes in Karen Hjelm Breen's life include getting her master's degree in psychology and returning to the work world for the first time in eighteen years. Her daughter graduates in May and her son is a sophomore in high school... Following the sudden death last February of her husband, Al, Mary Ingraham Agostino says friends and family have been wonderfully supportive during the year. "I've heard from many Bates people and want to thank everyone...and wish a better year to all of us in 1995."...Dave '64 and Louise Kennedy Hackett are doing very well. In July Louise started a new job in the central office of New Hampshire Vocational Rehabilitation as their new (and first) family support person. She travels the state, meeting with families and professionals to discuss employment issues. "Very exciting, especially to think that a state agency has actually hired me, the family advocate, to work 'on the inside.'"... News from the Krzynoweks: Ted has been with the same company [Image Polymers] for twenty-eight years and still travels to Europe and Japan regularly. Daughter Darcy '94 graduated, traveled, got a job, then moved back home. Judi (Laming '66) constantly prepares for new arrivals as Darcy's classmates and friends use their house as a hostel. Ted wonders if other classmates are experiencing the return of adult kids... At Rockville (Connecticut) High School, Jean-Ellen LeSure still teaches English to ninth and twelfth graders. She also continues to "paint and draw and generally have fun."... Joyce Mantyla works with a weekly syndicated TV show about fashion, "Main Floor," which airs weekends on ABC in most major markets--with a screen credit! She and husband Jack Weissman travel a lot, and he recovered from surgery in time to play his usual role of Santa Claus in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade... In her second year as principal of the Peterborough (New Hampshire) Elementary School, Susan Smith Newton says, "The community is very supportive of its schools, and is alive with performances in the visual and performing arts." In England last July, Sue revisited sites and friends she had known in Nottingham during her Junior Year Abroad... Jan Soltis White now works full time in husband Ben's medical practice. Last year's highlights included neighbor Julia Child's eightieth birthday party, daughter Genevieve's sixteenth birthday and driver's license, and son Toby's high-school graduation. Toby's First Night stilt dancing continues to be highlighted on New Year's Eve TV coverage in both New York and Boston... Last fall Carol Stone Beyna began part-time work at the county's school system science center, having resigned from the Maryland State Park Service in May. Ron retired from the U.S. Department of Defense last December after thirty-three years of service. The Beynas plan to move to Maine this fall... In May 1994 Charlene Wakefield, on a visit to Crete, was pleasantly surprised at the friendliness of the people. She also visited daughter Asia in California, and toured redwoods, vineyards, and historical sites. Her daughter Clover works for a temporary employment agency now that son Colin is two and in day care. Charlene sees her grandson often... Living in The Woodlands, Texas, for the past five years, Judy Wells Wait has been a full-time physical therapist with a nearby school district. She and husband Chip go camping or skiing and visit their kids in Colorado as often as possible. Daughter Tracy lives in a log cabin in the mountains, son David is in college in Golden, and Kelly, at college in Tacoma, Washington, is reason for further travel.

We hope that Boyer Financial Group of Allentown, Pennsylvania, is a huge success for Wenda and Geoff Boyer as daughter Julia will be a Bates student in 2014 when tuition will cost ???... After ten years in Washington, D.C., Gaby and Janet Grossman Rozman have settled in Caracas, Venezuela. He is head of the Ernst & Young consulting operation there. They love the climate and are getting used to the Latin ways. Their daughters are at the University of Virginia... Fifteenth Reunion golf champ Tim Hall is senior vice-president and division head at Citizens Savings Bank in Silver Spring, Maryland, and he has been vice-president for economic development and for finance at the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. Tim's special interest is the Chelsea School, as a founding director and now chairman of the board. And his greatest joy is his twins--Seth at Penn State, and Alyssa at the University of Pennsylvania... John Hanisch has a new position as vice-president of air-quality services with HMM that merged with Earth Technologies last May. John is responsible for consulting services nationwide in the resulting firm of over 1600 people... David and Sally Howe report that the world is turning, they are happy and find satisfaction living in Saco, Maine. Their daughter lives across the street and their son studies at Massachusetts College of Art. David asks, "Chuck Stratton, where are you?"...Judy Lanouette Nicholson ran in the New York Marathon and said the fear was not of being trampled in the stampede, but the realization that the Narrows Bridge was bouncing under the runners' combined weight. She does health promotion programs and personal training when not driving son Matt to soccer games and ski races. And she's sworn off marathons, giving husband Nick her rice cakes and bananas for the Boston... Colonel Wyland Leadbetter contributed an article to Career Compass, the Bates Career Services newsletter. As brigade commander, Wyland makes sure that his 5,000 soldiers are ready for anything and that their families' needs are met daily. He says that those who are successful in the military would succeed in other fields as well... With General Electric for twenty years, Alan Lewis is executive vice-president and general counsel at GE Investments. His wife, Susan, opened her own law practice last year, daughter Barbie is at Harvard Business School, and son Arnold has been on JYA in Madrid... Karl McKusick has taken a five-month leave from his job as speech and language pathologist in Kelowana, British Columbia, to work on a manuscript of his children's stories and illustrations. As his hobby is photography, he took a trip to southeast Utah and would love to lead an expedition of photographers down there. At Lake Louise, the McKusicks met with John Pedrick '66, and hiked, camped, talked to exhaustion... Don Miller's new job as administrator of an eighty-bed nursing home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is interesting and challenging... "On the Road Again," characterizes Shirley Murphy Mongillo, who writes "No news here," then goes on to report that, after they just settled back into New England, Tom was moved to Austin, Texas... Sally Myers McGinty teaches expository writing at Harvard. She "enjoys the students and the community of scholarship and inquiry that characterizes the place." Sally also chairs the junior competition committee of the USTA in New England... There is no moss growing on David Sutherland in Keene, New Hampshire, where he is certified as a radio marketing master at WKNE, chairs the local Chamber of Commerce, is treasurer of the New England Antique Radio Club, announces for motor sports racing, is restoring his home, and has a growing antiques business. Otherwise he chases three-year-old Lauren.

Next Reunion in 1999. In a long letter from Pat Hardy Michiels, still in Honolulu, she sends the sad news that she lost her twenty-three-year-old son in a car accident on June 7. We are sad to learn of Ben's death and keep Pat in our thoughts. Although out of touch with Bates, she says her "old pals there and friends are increasingly important now." Pat is executive director with AmeriVox phone card company. As a "forerunner in a new industry," she is diversifying into other telecommunications products for hotels; she produces phone cards and is a dealer to the collector market. With her travels to many shows and conventions here and abroad, we hope a Boston trip will allow for a visit back to Bates. Pat also continues to represent NuSkin and Interior Design nutritional products and to sell top-quality water purifiers.

He lives in Harvard, Massachusetts... From Perth City in Australia, David Williams says, "You probably don't get many cards from 'down under.'" He is working with the Western Australian government on environmental problems related to mining. His job is part of a staff exchange between the U.S. Bureau of Management, for whom he works, and the Western Australia Department of Minerals and Energy. "Perth is a great city, though somewhat warm for a northerner like me," he adds.

As a member of the Maine Touring Artist Program, Martha Blowen exhibited more of her hand-made paper in the Lewiston/Auburn College Upstairs Gallery concurrently with an Arts Auction Exhibition in March. Her "Pieces of Paper" exhibit, created in collaboration with a group of women artists, Martha calls "a kind of medieval tapestry of bits of faded color" using about a thousand pieces... At Planned Parenthood of Austin, Carol Burgess Goetz is a family-planning specialist and community outreach coordinator. She is involved in "too many" social-political activist groups centered about issues of choice, spirituality, tolerance, HIV and AIDS awareness, gay-lesbian rights, censorship, and other public-school-related problems. She and Steve '74, with Rebecca, sixteen, and Joseph, ten, worked hard on Ann Richards's campaign for governor... As a Merrill Lynch financial consultant to women-owned businesses and professional women, Carla Clark Liberatore enjoys life in Durham, North Carolina. Husband David is an architect and they have sons six and two... Mario and Nancy Ellis Cornacchio are "alive and well" in Westford, Massachusetts. His job as assistant treasurer of the Cabot Corporation in Boston entails a lot of overseas travel. Nancy, mother to "two little jocks," eleven and five, keeps in touch with Elaine Seabrook Drugan who lives in Houston with husband Steve and two sons... Dr. Mark Delaney, Capt. USPHS, missed Reunion because of the arrival of their third daughter and the construction of a new home which they moved into in August... Robert Faldetta works at Centro Hispano in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He has earned a second master's degree, in international management, at Thunderbird. He has taught English as a second language in several countries: five years in Colombia, two in Miami and in Boston, six months in Jamaica, and four years in Korea... About Reunion, Cindy Gengarrelly Shimp writes, "Two days of perfect crisp weather and so many familiar, smiling faces made twenty years melt away. The College did its usual first-class job of housing and feeding so many alumni. Our five-year-old was entertained whenever necessary through an excellent program headed efficiently by Karen Lecomte '96."...Grace Goldberg is digging into her Jewish roots and taking Hebrew lessons... Janet Haines said Reunion was a "great experience."...In Colorado, Jane "Vicki" Hauser Colten is "grateful to be at home with Danny, six, and Jesse, three, and watch them grow. Husband Jerry keeps long hours so she has taken up golf to spend some time with him... Scott King lives in Norfolk, Virginia, and is director of student and scholar services at Old Dominion University. Active in the Association of International Educators, he also serves on the vestry of his church; he is a board member of the Canterbury Center, the Episcopal campus ministry; of Integrity, the Episcopal gay and lesbian ministry; and he works in AIDS outreach. We were sorry to learn of the death of his partner of fifteen years in 1992... Still with Digital Equipment, Jim Kutrubes manufactures controllers at DEC's Colorado Springs disk drive and storage plant. The family is "going Western" complete with their horse, Court Jester... After teaching history and coaching for eighteen years at Norwell (Massachusetts) High School, Bob Littlefield has left that job, and "now has more time for my own two kids."... Ann McKay works full time as an administrative assistant at a podiatry practice in Bangor, Maine. She still plays the flute, especially with the Praise and Worship team at her Abundant Life Church... At Prattville School in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Dottie Macomber Sereda has completed seventeen years as a resource-room teacher of children with learning disabilities, and has been vice-president of the local teachers union. She runs into Doug Sears occasionally. He is chairman of the Boston University Management Team which is overseeing the public schools in Chelsea for a ten-year period... Mary Nucefora Buck finds life less stressful now that her youngest is in school. She also mentions how much her whole family enjoyed Reunion... Working part time, Karen Olson writes about poverty-related issues and says she is trying to be a better neighbor and wrestling with issues related to a simpler lifestyle... Living in Bryantown, Maryland, Colleen Peterson Seremet has a new job as principal of an elementary school while she writes her dissertation. Husband Tom is a full professor of math at a community college, and they are parents of a daughter, sixteen, and two sons, fourteen and seven... It was a real treat to catch up with Julia Ragan Malkin at Reunion after having lost touch for so many years... We are delighted to hear from former classmate Joseph Wadland. Working for the federal government for ten years, he has since earned his master's degree at Boston University and the J.D. degree at Suffolk University by going to night school. He has been a practicing attorney in Boston for nine years, living in Andover. He and wife Donna keep busy with the music lessons and ten teams in four sports of their three children... As Deputy Director of Forestry in Alaska, Marty Welbourn loves the state and would enjoy meeting Batesies who have Alaska on their vacation list. She and husband John Freeman missed Reunion because of a conflict with a family wedding... Jon and Nancy Johnson Young had a wonderful time at Reunion and reiterate what others have reported--"The programs for children were outstanding and allowed parents a much-needed break." (Their Kristen, eleven, and Laurie, nine, are athletic and musical.) Nancy teaches math at Gorham (Maine) High School, and Jon is acting dean at Thomas College for the second year.

Brian Aldrich is finishing up ten years of grad school at Cornell University... Dr. Jeff Brown has a very active professional career as one of the leaders of Denver's public health clinic system. Somehow he is balancing that job with wife Sally's return to medical school, and an "ongoing power struggle between Matt and year-old 'Baby Gick' (Nick)"...Sensing that his employer, Raynet, was in financial trouble (later sold at end of 1994), Steve Cutcomb started moonlighting. Now he has a second almost-full-time career in the tree-pruning business in Mountain View, California. Son Raymond is out of kindergarten this spring... Meanwhile, Dr. Bill Deighan continues to place well in Maine whitewater racing and has added to his collection of motorcycles--now six. His and his partner's dental practice continues to flourish... David Foster and Mina Samuels moved to a new apartment (with a real kitchen) on Riverside Drive in Manhattan. He is the incoming president of the Newsletter Publisher's Association. His company, IOMA, in addition to twenty-six for-profit titles, now publishes the Human Rights Watch Update pro bono. Class Agent David has been nominated as an alumni Trustee at Bates... It's a big move for John and Susan Young Haile. He has a new position as dean of admissions and English department chair at Western Reserve Academy. They all, including David, thirteen, Andrew, nine, and Sarah, five, enjoy their new life in the Cleveland area, but will head back East to Androscoggin Lake this summer... In Holland, Clem Herman continues to do international market research and retail space management, also trying to be the "best possible dad" for his three- and nearly-two-year-old kids... Nice to hear from Major Victor Splan, who has brought us up to date since he left Bates in 1976. He returned in 1989 and graduated in 1990. He, his wife Patrice, and new daughter live in Arlington, Virginia... Continuing his great efforts at environmental education, Stuart Strahl has been appointed to the executive committees of the Environmental Fund of Maryland and the Shore Clinical Foundation. Daughter Margaret turns one this June... Daughters Sarah and Amy "continue to be a constant source of entertainment," says Deb Thyng Schmidt. She keeps in touch with lots of classmates and other Bates alums, and is a volunteer for the Bates Alumni-in-Admissions program.

Next Reunion in 1995. In Jackman, Maine, Dr. Don Dubois is still country doctoring and trying to keep up with his children, nine and two. She has organized a committee to bring a YMCA to the town, is active at her sons' schools, and participates in a book club and a quilting club. On August 5, 1994, June Peterson Arney adopted a little boy from Uzbekistan named Kyle Arney, who was born March 6, 1993. Chris (Tegeler) survived their "massive yard sale" and a move to Scarborough, where they look forward to starting a new garden... A full-time mom, Jane Betit Sommers formerly was a computer programmer and systems analyst at the Hartford Insurance Group. She earned her M.B.A. degree from the University of Hartford in 1987. Husband Mark is a metallurgist at Pratt and Whitney... Living in West Chester, Pennsylvania, for the past five years, Michael and Alison Grott Bonney report that their garden and orchard are bearing fruit. Beth says, "The kids go to three sessions and tour the campus so they can see themselves in a college setting--with women professors, and a dean that's a woman."...Dr. Gregory Kechejian maintains a busy surgical practice in Boston. He and Kathleen plan to be on the Cape in August and would welcome a call from anyone passing through Harwich... Cathie Kimball has moved her full-time family practice to 58 Elm Street in Waterville. This past year she has been chief of staff at the local Osteopathic Hospital... Cathy Klein reports they are two full-time employed parents with sons Alex, who is learning to play cello with the Suzuki method, and brother Adam, slated to follow on the violin when he is three... Dr. Nick Kofos reports that changes in eye care are "some for the better, some for the worse." Involved with several of the largest HMOs in their area (Marlborough, Massachusetts), he observes that restrictive enrollment policies, less freedom of choice for patients, and quality of care are still concerns in his profession... Peter and Joyce Kornetsky Groemmer have "survived" their first year in their own business, Pizza Prima in Mashpee, Massachusetts. She still writes copy and does public relations part time at a firm in Hyannis... Jon Land has started a new job as director of product management for Fidelity Investments. They have moved and bought a new house... In his fourth year with the New York City Transit Authority, Paul McPhee is deputy superintendent in rapid transit operations (subways on the "L" line that serve about 75,000 customers weekdays). He says the rebirth of rail transit is an exciting field to be in. "In these days of proactive environmental action, my field is a very 'green' one." He and Janet are glad to be back in civilian life and safely on the ground after eight years in the Air Force... In New York City, Mary Mihalakos is a personal-injury lawyer in a small midtown firm. Between court appearances she takes cooking classes and works out. Networking with Batesies, she had a wonderful dinner with Michael and Betty Chu in Washington, saw godson Peter and his brother, Christopher, and saw other dinner guest Jason Sparkowski '81. Mary also saw Bates alums in a New York Bates Club party that included Jon Zanger '79, Dion Wilson '75, and Conrad Gaskin '80, and she keeps in touch with Gina and Allen Weinberg '79... In Charleston, West Virginia, Glenn Miller worked at Union Carbide until 1993 and now is with a company that makes "surfacants," products that control the bubbles in foam, he explains, such as that used in cushions and mattresses... For the past three years Bambi Morgan Delattre has lived in Palm City, Florida, and looks forward to Reunion... Glenn Morrell is a systems developer for ITT in Hartford, Connecticut. He still skis almost every weekend from November to June, does a lot of mountain biking and back packing in the summer... Before returning to Falmouth, Maine, the Michael Morrisons traveled in Asia for over three months, visiting China, Nepal, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Bali. He consults for the Glacier Research Group of the University of New Hampshire, and is exploring year-round organic gardening... Belinda Osier Aicher, mainly a stay-at-home mom, taught one Latin class at the University of Southern Maine in the spring... Promoted to associate editor at Massachusetts Audubon, Ann Prince Hecker is involved in the Sanctuary magazine schedule, the new Centennial Book, and the State Breeding Bird Atlas. Husband Scott, also at Audubon, works on protecting rare beach-nesting birds... Siran Seropian Faulders left the private practice of law and works in the office of the attorney general in Virginia. In her new position she works on many interesting legislative issues including health-care and welfare reform... Robert Umberfield is building a new house in Edgecomb, Maine. He merged his Five Star Construction, Inc., with Boothbay Region Construction, Inc., and formed Newco Management Company, a full-service residential company... After trying to get back to Maine for years, Jeff and Lisa Jepson Wahlstrom are in Bangor, where he is executive director of Maine United Way of Penobscot Valley. Lisa took a break from being a fund-raising consultant and is for now at home with their two young sons.

As director of alumni affairs at Westbrook College, Sally Nutting Somes reports that their annual fund has set records and the alumni volunteer network is strengthened. Sally also oversees publications. She and Barry had several trips with his Atlantic Tour Company. He works with the local fire department in Cumberland as well as with the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce in Greater Portland... The new chief of staff for Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, Kevin Raye worked on campaigns for the senator as an undergraduate. After graduation, he was a full-time caseworker in the office and was promoted to district representative in 1987, covering three offices in Maine... Deborah Taylor reports via e-mail that she is a Ph.D. degree student in English at the University of Maryland/College Park.

Scott Raymond has a new position as director of business development at Azron, Inc., a California company that develops and manufactures medical data information and management systems. The company's key product is a "physician-friendly" electronic medical record software package to fully automate and integrate medical data... Blake Ross writes that when he married Sarah Reynolds she "brought two wonderful children into our marriage--Yves thirteen, and Elizabeth, ten."... This June Tony Zydlewski is being separated from the Army after serving as chief of the Department of Internal Medicine at Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital in Fort Polk, Louisiana. He and his wife, Susan Settinori, with their two children, will be in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for her last year in the Army. From there they will go to Indianapolis for more training under a nephrology fellowship.
