'Coachie' enters his sixth season as head coach of the Bates Women's Rugby Club in 2008. He is a USA Rugby certified coach. Over his first five seasons he has compiled a record of 23 wins, 13 losses, and 2 ties. The team has made the playoffs in all 5 seasons that he has been at the helm and they have also won the Downeast Conference Championship twice (2004 & 2005). Along with coaching the women's team, Coach Farrell also spent one season coaching both the men and the women.
Rugby has been a passion of Coach Farrell's since he started playing rugby at the University of Maine, Orono. After being a three year starter at UMaine, he continued his love affair with rugby after graduation by playing with a few different clubs and also as a USA Rugby referee. His coaching career began with the Portland Girls Rugby Club. During his three years as head coach, the Portland Girls won three consecutive New England Championships undefeated and unscored upon in New England play. He also led the Portland Girls to the National Championships in 2005 where they finished 7th and ended up ranked tenth in the country.
Coach Farrell, when not coaching rugby, is a mathematics teacher at Brunswick High School and also a varsity girls basketball coach at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, Maine. He resides in Lisbon Falls with his number one supporter, his wife, Meggin (aka 'Wifey' to the Bates Women!).
