We hosted singer/songwriter Lynn Deeves at the Ronj

March 2002: Women's History Month Lunchtime Series. Discussions included

  • Professor Rebecca Herzig: "Technologies of Difference: Race, Sex, and Hair Removal in Early Twentieth-Century America"
  • Professor Erica Rand: "Breeders on a Golf Ball: Looking for Sex at Ellis Island"
  • Professor Jualynne Dodson: "On Matriarchy, Feminism, and Non-Europeaned Women: Are We Sure Essentialism is So Offbase?"

December 2001: Co-hosted a Ska fundraiser concert for the Abused Women's Advocacy Project in Lewiston, Maine

November 2001: Celebrated the annual international "16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence"

  • Invited Layli Miller, Esq. from the Tahirih Justice Center in Washington D.C. to speak about "Global Impact of Violence Against Women"

The Vision of the Bates College Women's Resource Center is:
  • To create a safe and comfortable space for women on campus

  • To provide a place for students to exchange ideas and meet with peers and professors outside of an academic setting

  • To provide a pro-active, supportive environment that builds community

  • To generate and encourage dialogue between men and women regarding gender and women's issues at a local, national and international level

  • To facilitate action and raise awareness regarding gender and women's issues in order to help create a campus free of sexism, discrimination and violence
