Nate Merrill, '08

Tillerae Fryingpanae

This is the second week in a row that Nate has sailed well for Bates. He won A division at the Hewitt Trophy last week and nabbed the fourth spot in A division at the Lake Champlain Open at UVM this past weekend, leading Bates to a fifth-place performance overall with his two bullets that won the tiebreak.

Born at sea off the coast of Massachusetts and educated at Tabor Academy, Nate posesses an incredible ability to focus on even the most minute/insignificant details of sailing. Nothing escapes his careful observation. Wearing nothing but a PFD and shorts and holding his tiller frying-pan style, Nate is something like a criticizing mom on the water. If your leechline tension is off, Nate will notice. If your aren't popping your roll tacks as hard as you should, Nate will let you know. If you are sailing in a pack of boats, Nate will yell that you could go faster if you split up. In fact, doing what he says would probably make you go faster, if he weren't sitting on you the whole leg...
