Macbeth is 7th in Nation, All-American; 4 x 400 finishes 10th

So Adam Macbeth finished 7th out of the 8 finalists in the 55m Hurdles this afternoon, good enough for the All-American honor. Macbeth ran 7.83 for his final time, roughly .10 seconds slower than his 7.73 in the finals yesterday. Macbeth is the first ever Bates hurdler to become an All American, so congratulations to him.

The 4 x 400 team of Joel Colony, Matt Capone, Macbeth, and Sam Thomas finished 10th in the country with a time of 3:22.21.

That wraps up the 2005-2006 Indoor Track & Field season for Bates and the rest of the DIII teams in the country. The first outdoor track meet is April 1 at Bates against Springfield and USM,

NEWS UPDATE (3/11/06)

Finally, some nice weather!

Lewiston finally got a warm, sunny day with little wind and the Bates distance crew went for the first run of the season without a shirt - 9 miles on a Saturday after a solid 5-6 mile tempo run. Nice!

NEWS UPDATE (3/11/06)

Macbeth Set to Become All-American, Noah Finishes 10th

All Adam Macbeth has to do is cross the line today in the finals of the 55m Hurdles, and he will be an All American . Macbeth ran 7.73, the second fastest time he has ever run in his career. He is competing with an elite group of 7 other hurdlers, the top seed being Justin Rush, a sophomore from Otterbein College who ran 7.61. So today is all fun and games for Macbeth.

Noah finished 5th in the first flight of the 35 lb weight throw, but was bested by five other throwers in the second flight. The top nine advanced to the finals. Noah threw 57-00.00, while the athlete ahead of him in 9th threw 58-8.00, well over his PR.

The 4 x 400 team competes today at 7:40 pm Minnesota time (an hour behind New England). As of now, Macbeth is planning on running in the relay, despite hamstring problems that have been bothering him all week. So now we can wait and see what Macbeth, Joel Colony, Matt Capone, and Sam Thomas will put out there tonight.

Results from the meet are posted here

Bates Men To Send 5 Track & Field Athletes and Mia to NCAA DIII Nationals

"Mia automatically gets the honor baton for saving us $4,500 by going to Nationals"

--Coach Fereshetian (Quote of the Decade)

The waiting period to find out who made it to Nationals ended late Sunday night when the list was released.

The 4 x 400m Relay Team (Joel Colony, Matt Capone, Adam Macbeth, Sam Thomas, alternate Sam Murphy), Macbeth in the 55m Hurdles, and Noah Gauthier in the 35lb Weight Throw are all set to head out to St. Olaf College in Minnesota this Thursday, leaving Bates at 4am.

Noah is seeded 11th in the nation out of 13 entrants; the 4 x 400 team is seeded 10th out of 10 entrants, and Macbeth is seeded 10th out of 14 entrants. So all these guys have an opportunity to become All Americans. If it happens, it will be the second for Sam Thomas and Joel Colony, and the first for Macbeth, Capone, Noah, and...Mia!

The Performance List for the 2006 NCAA Division III Championships are posted here.

Noah Gauthier and 4 x 400 Team win at Trinity Last Chance Meet at Yale; Lopez sets Lifetime PR

Noah Gauthier won the 35lb weight throw with a toss of 58-01.75, and the 4 x 400m team consisting of Matt Capone, Joel Colony, Adam Macbeth, and Sam Thomas won with a time of  3:22.11.

Noah beat second place Jason Foster of Colby by nearly a foot in the eight man field and is currently sitting 11th in the country (top 12 go to Nationals this weekend). After his throw, Noah was 9th, but then Ross Kapp from Wisconsin threw 58-3 in a different meet, and Pete Ringquist from the same team jumped ahead of Noah with a toss around 59 feet, after Noah had jumped ahead of him. So currently 11th, likely to go to Nationals, Noah looks like he's in good shape. Furthermore, Noah's 58-01.75 is a new lifetime PR.

The 4 x 400 team won by about a second in a 4 team field, which included fellow NESCAC schools Amherst and Trinity. The 3:22.11 was nowhere near their 3:17.73 they ran last week at BU, and they are currently sitting at 11th in the country (again, top 12 go on to Nationals). So now, like Noah, they will be waiting the next couple days to see if they will get a chance to compete at St. Olaf College in Minnesota this weekend.

Matt Lopez also competed in the weight throw, finishing in 4th place with a throw of 50-04.50, a huge lifetime PR. Lopez, who had qualified for the ECAC Championships, was given the opportunity to compete at Yale to avoid making the 10 hour drive to southern Pensylvannia.

Matt Biggart ended his final collegiate indoor track season in front of his parents, 15 minutes from his hometown in Cheshire. Biggart finished 13th in the 5000m, running 15:47. Although not one of his best performances this year, Biggart has had a phenomenal season, and is looking forward to getting back to normal training for outdoor track.

Emmanuel Drabo finished 6th in the triple jump, recording 43-03.00 feet. This was about 2 feet short of his 45-04.00 PR from the State Meet last month, Drabo also had a great season, especially considering he is only a sophomore.

Reactions were mixed about the meet. This was the first time Bates has competed on Yale's year old 4-lane banked track, and while our guys liked the track, they were less enthusiastic about the field house, Coxe Cage. Since all the stands are in front of the first curve, it makes it nearly impossible to get cheering on the sides or back of the track, so it felt somewhat dead.

NEWS (2/25/06)

Bates Continues to Shine at Day 2 of Open New Englands

Bates finished in 19th place today out of 33 teams at the conclusion of today's Open New England Championships held at Boston University.

Adams Macbeth ran 7.77 in the semifinals of the 55m Hurdles and came back with a lifetime PR of 7.72 in the finals, placing fourth overall. Macbeth's time currently seats him at 7th place in the country. Joel Colony ran 6.69 and finished 9th in the 55m Dash semifinals. Sam Thomas came back for the 500m finals and ran 1:07.80. Emmanuel Drabo had an off day today and fouled in the Triple Jump.

The relays performed well as well. The 4 x 800m team's goal going into the meet was to break 8 minutes, which would be a seasonal PR and put them on the Bates top 10 all time list. Percy led off with a 1:57 leg, followed by Mia with 1:59, CJ with 1:59, and Watson running his first anchor leg for Bates in 1:59. The total time was 7:57.74. The team placed fifth in their heat. They raced the tenth fastest time ever run by a Bates team.

The 4 x 400 team's goal was to break 3:20. Colony started off running at 48.6 leg, followed by Capone with a 49.8, Macbeth with 49.3, and anchored by Thomas with a 49.9. Their total time was 3:17.73. The race was significant because all 4 athletes ran under 50 seconds for their legs, and because it provisionally qualifies the team for Nationals.

This concludes the indoor season for most of the Bobcats, but next week a few athletes will travel to New Haven to compete at Trinity's Last Chance Meet, held at Yale University.

Full results of the meet can be found here.

Bates Fares Well in Day 1 of Open New England Championships

Sam Thomas broke the 17 year old 500m Dash record (set in 1989) today at the first day of competition of the Open New England Championships, held at Boston University. Sam's time of 1:05.35 bettered Craig Geikie's '89 record by 38 hundredths of a second. Sam will advance to the finals tomorrow afternoon. Joel Colony ran 6.66 in the 55m Dash, qualifying for the semifinals tomorrow. Joel also had a lifetime PR in the 200m Dash, running 22.44. This time is good enough for second on the all time Bates list, and beat Joe Northrup's 22.45 by one one hundredth of a second. Adam Macbeth ran 7.9 in the 55m Hurdles.

Results of Day 1 can be found here.

New Season Highlight Videos Posted

Thanks to Bates alum Jordon Upton '04, we now have two more season highlight videos posted from the 2002-03 and 2003-04 indoor track seasons. Upton directed these videos, capturing highlights from his last two indoor seasons at Bates. Fortunately, Adam Macbeth held on to these videos and thought that they would be a good addition to the site. They're pretty damn impressive, so check them out in the Photos/Videos section, or by clicking here. You can also see a video of highlights from the 2004-05 indoor season directed by Macbeth by following the same links.

NEWS (2/18/06)

Bates finishes 3rd at Div III New Englands

Bates walked away from the Division III New England Championships at MIT today with a third place finish out of 25 competing teams. Williams won with 153 points, Tufts was second with 131, Bates was third with 62.50, and MIT was fourth with 57.50. On the way home when we stopped for dinner in New Hampshire, Judge, who had been at the women's' meet at Tufts all day, asked us what our standout race was that got us our points. As we thought about it we realized that there was no one standout race. There were no individual or relay winners, but every athlete who competed scored. It was a solid, team effort all the way through.

Things started off well when Jerome placed 4th in the pole vault, equaling his PR of 13-06. Things got even better when Macbeth qualified provisionally for Nationals in the 55m Hurdles but running 7.79 in the prelims and then coming back with a 7.74 in the finals. For someone who has never broken 7.80 to do it twice back to back is pretty impressive. Capone ran 23.04 in the 200 prelims on a slow track, which bodes well for future meets. In the high jump, Canova came 2 inches away from a new PR. He cleared 6-1 and the next increment was 6-3 (6-2 is his PR), but he didn't quite get it. Biggart ran well in the 5k, running 15:31, a time that is becoming routine for him this season. Noah did very well in the throwing events, coming in 4th in both the shot put and weight. He has not thrown 49-7 this season, so that was good news as well.

At the end of the meet Bates was tied with MIT for 3rd place, and the DMR team consisting of Percy, Mia, Watson, and CJ finished 4th overall with an ECAC qualifying time, pulling Bates ahead of MIT. The 4 x400 was next, and Colony, Capone, Macbeth, and Thomas finished in 2nd with a great time of 3:23.55 on a flat track. Since MIT had no 4 400 relay team, it was up to them to end the meet with a 2nd place finish in the 4 x 800. They got 6th. But those MIT guys ran with a lot of heart in the relay. They kept moving up and it looked like, at times, they were in a great position to move up. Their standout pole vaulter, Nate Ball, who is seeded second in the country 'no-heighted' in the vault, causing MIT to lose valuable points. Then again, we did not have John Miley, who is still injured and would have scored valuable points in the pentathlon and other events. So all in all, a good day. Interestingly, the team results through number 4 were the same as last year (Williams, Tufts, Bates, MIT). We were not expecting this since we lost great athletes in last year's senior class (Joel Anderson, Joe Northrup, Scott Cooper, Dustin Gauthier, Mitch Krauss, etc).

Bates will compete next weekend at the Open New England meet held at Boston University. See you there.

Bates Pentathletes Fare Well at Day 1 of Division III New Englands

Andrew Tibbetts finished 5th out of sixteen competitors today in the first day of the DIII New England Championships. Tibbett's efforts (2976 points) were good enough to start the Bobcats off with 4 points before going into tomorrow's main track and field competition. Mike Canova finished 12th with 2716 points. Jack Murphy was 13th with 2645 points. While this was Jack's first pentathlon, both Tibbetts and Canova had already competed in the event once before at the Bates Pentathlon held in December.  Tibbetts improved upon his performance from December, earning 95 more points, improving from December's 2881 points. Canova was 70 points shy of his December performance, where he scored 2786 points.

Justin Freeman '98 is 4th American Finisher at Turin Olympics

Justin Freeman finished 53rd out of 97 other skiers in the 15k Nordic ski race at the 2006 Winter Olympics. These were Freeman's first Olympic games and he covered the course in 42:00.9. For comparison, Seth Hubbard, Bates' top Nordic ski racer, finished 4th out of 65 skiers last weekend, covering a 15k course in 55:38.2. It'd be nice to know Dunlap's time, but T-Unit who is sitting right here as we update this doesn't know it. Anyway, Freeman did great and the whole process of following him in the Olympics has been a great opportunity for everyone involved. Congratulations to him.

Even though the Bates website beat us to it, Coach Fresh sent over some emails from Justin Freeman that he has received that we intended to post here. And...we're still going to post them.

NEWS (2/11/06)

Early results from BU Valentine's Invitational and MIT Meet

Although there are no official results posted yet from either the BU or the MIT meet, the BU guys have returned to campus as of 9:00 tonight and have good stuff to report from both meets.

To start things off, Biggart ran a lifetime PR in the 3k in 8:53. He ran his last lap in 29 seconds, so it seems that he probably can run at least 8:45 if he distributes himself well throughout the race. Watson ran a lifetime PR in the open 800 with a time of 1:59.2. CJ Murray ran 2:40 in the 1,000m. The 4 x 400m relay team of Capone, Macbeth, Thomas, and Colony ran 3:20, which just misses the qualifying mark for Nationals. Colony ran a 48 second anchor leg, however. Noah threw 49-2.50 in the shot. Also at BU, Capone ran 22.90 in the 200m dash, a seasonal PR.

MIT was pretty interesting as well. First off, Viti won the 1000, the first race he has ever won, in 2:52, a second off his PR set at Coast Guard. Stompy broke 16 in the 5k! The big guy gave himself a huge margin for error, crossing the line in 15:59.86. Good work Stomp, pushing it to the absolute limit. Canova equaled his lifetime PR in the high jump with a jump of 6-2.00. Lopez was second in the 35lb weight throw with a toss of 46-8.00 and fourth in the shot with a throw of 41-4.00 Tibbetts won the 600m in 1:26.92, and Jerome Bennett won the pole vault in 13-6.00, a lifetime PR.

We will have more information about both meets posted tomorrow once results are in and heroic stories have been told. Sounds like a great day for Bates!

But for now, this is Steve Monsulick's last Saturday night at Bates until next fall, as he is going to Tasmania for the rest of the year this week. That said, Goodnight.

NEWS (2/11/06)

Women Excel at BU Last Night

OK, so ordinarily the women's team does not get covered on this site, but last night was pretty cool.

Captain Keelin Godsey '06, the 4 x 400m relay team, and Molly Balentine '08 left Bates at noon yesterday and went down to Boston University for Day 1 of BU's Valentine's Day Classic. And they all excelled. As a side note, athletes and teams from all over the country come to Boston this weekend to participate in this meet. And not just teams that border New England. There are teams from Florida, Texas, California, Colorado, Canada, Maryland, and many more. Finally, this meet consists of athletes and teams from every division in NCAA athletics (I, II, and III).

Godsey beat every single competitor in the 20 lb weight throw, with a seasonal best of 63-2.75. He came back in the shot with a second place finish with a toss of 65-6.25. Not a bad performance from Keelin at all, considering he was hit in the back by a flying 35lb weight in practice by one of illustrious members of the men's team last week!

The 4 x 400m relay team consisted of Captain Kathleen Nugent '06, Danielle Touhey '06, Izzy Alexander '09, and Captain Ashley Wentworth '06. The team broke the Bates indoor record by over five seconds, running a total time of 4:01.48. This was good enough for 18th place out of 36 teams.

Oh my god, Molly the fastest mile she has ever run at Bates, clocking in at 5:21. Maybe it was the banked track; maybe it was hard work she's put in; maybe it was working all night on an Ecology lab report. Either way, Molly ran a great race.

So a brief departure from the usual content on this site, but it seemed well warranted.

Results from last night's women's competition can be found here.

The men are currently competing at BU and MIT.

Let it be known that T-Unit is going for a lifetime PR in the mile - trying to break 4:57, a time he ran back in his Lawrenceville days of old. May everyone give a silent prayer for Timothy. Thank you.

State of Maine Meet

Bates finished second overall at last night's State Meet held at University of Southern Maine. Bowdoin won with 183.50 points, Bates with 159.50, USM with 130, and Colby with 48.

Two Bates athletes won the prestigious individual honors, presented at the Awards Ceremony at the conclusion of the meet. Noah Gauthier won the Peter Goodrich Award, presented to an outstanding field event athlete. Goodrich was a Bates alum who graduated in 1989, was a six-time All American thrower, and was a passenger in one of the planes that flew into the World Trade Towers. Noah's brother, Dustin, has received the cup for the past two years, so it was nice to keep it not only in the Bates family but also in the Gauthier family. Dustin was there to see his brother accept the award. Joel Colony won the Jim Westcott award, presented to an outstanding track athlete. Westcott was the head Colby coach for many years and was there last night to present the award to Joel, who was the first Bates athlete to ever win the award.

The meet started off well, with Noah winning both the weight throw (57-10.50) and shot put (47-09.50). Matt Lopez '08 was 4th in the weight and 5th in the shot. Graham Raymond was 7th in the weight and 9th in the shot. Colony kicked off the track events, winning the 55m Dash prelims and finals, coming 8/100 of a second away from qualifying for Nationals. Matt Capone followed up with a 3rd place performance in the event. Joel also won the 200m in an incredibly close race that had to be determined by photos. Joel won in 23.01, but second place was 23.03 and third was 23.04. Sam Thomas finished second in the 400 in 51.26, coming in behind USM's freshman standout Jimmy Sawyer. In the 600m, Sam "Mia" Murphy won the slow heat overwhelmingly, which was good enough to put him in second place overall, putting distance between Bates and Bowdoin. John Miley was supposed to compete in that event, but he suffered from a leg injury early on in the high jump and was forced to retire for the rest of the meet. Adam Macbeth won the 55m hurdles in 7.85 seconds, and was part of the winning 4 x 400m relay team that ran 3:26:03, beating out Bowdoin (3:26:45).

The middle distance and distance runners held up their end of the bargain as well. CJ Murray had a hell of a day. He finished 4th in the mile in 4:25 (a lifetime PR), 25 minutes later he finished 4th in the 800 in 2:00, and then came back to anchor the Blackout 4 x 800 with a 1:59 leg. Last week CJ ran the open 800 and 4 x 8 in 2:01 and 2:00 respectively, so he improved on that, plus he threw in a 4:25 mile. Not bad. Andrew Percy ran in his first meet of the season, coming in 6th in the mile with a lifetime best of 4:33 and then ran another lifetime best of 2:01 in the second leg of the 4 x 8. Harrison "Radio" Little also opted to run today, running a lifetime best in the mile with 4:41. Joining him was roommate Tim McCall who ran  5 flat in the mile, 13 seconds faster than he did last year at the same meet.

In the 1000m, Watson ran 2:39, good enough for 6th place. The 5000m was a great race. Biggart was in the lead pack the entire race, and with 7 laps to go he took the lead. It was perhaps a bit too soon, however, and he finished 4th in 15:30, only 3 seconds slower than his lifetime PR. It was a great race for him. Stompy had a phenomenal race. His goal was to break 16, and he ended up running 16:04, but he hung in there the whole race and later agreed that if someone had told him last year that within a year he would run 16:04, he would think they were crazy.

One of our main problems last night was that we failed to score any points in high jump. Between Miley's injury, and Mike Canova's recovery from a stress fracture, we did not have the strength to make a statement in that event. Freshman Jerome Bennett, however, finished second in the pole vault with a PR of 13-00.00. Macbeth came back to win the Long Jump in 21-07.00, and Emmanuel Drabo overwhelmingly won the Triple Jump in 45-04.00.

The meet ended with that great 4 x 400m relay team consisting of Capone, Macbeth, Sam Thomas, and Colony. It finally concluded with the Blackout 4 x 800m relay. Mia led off with a 2:09, Percy with 2:01, Watson with 2:03, and CJ with his 1:59. For a history about the Blackout relay, click here.

Overall, Coach Fresh was pleased with the performances. We did not accomplish our goal of winning, but we had some great individual performances and held out own out there. Next week we will split the team up. Some athletes will compete at BU for the Valentine's Day Invitational, and some will compete at the MIT Invitational across the Charles River in Cambridge.

A History of the State of Maine meet can be found here. Full results of last night's meet can be found here.

NEWS (1/28/06)

University of Southern Maine Invitational

Any doubts as to how Bates would perform at today's USM Co-Ed Invitational were quelled as the Bobcats convincingly won the 5-team meet with 200 points, beating UMass Dartmouth (140 points), USM (133 points), Rhode Island College (96 points), and Emmanuel College (44 points). It was about 65 degrees outside in Gorham, Maine today - all we had to do was cross the road and race on the outdoor track but instead the teams competed indoors. Oh well.

Everyone performed outside of themselves today. Let's start off by saying that Stompy won his first honor baton by winning the 3k in 9:12 - only a second slower than Biggart's outstanding performance at Coast Guard two weeks ago. Now, Stompy winning an event, or Stompy running 9:12 is an amazing thing, and to have both happen concurrently is amazing. All the throwers threw PRs, the middle distance guys ran seasonal PRs, and the sprinters did what they always do - perform.

Bates did not enter a single athlete in the 55m Dash, and Jack Murphy '08 was the only entry in the 200. This was the first time Jack had raced the 200 at the collegiate level and he ran it in 25.61, finishing 7th out of 10 runners. Joel Colony was perhaps the highlight of the meet, winning the 400 in 50.91 in a do-or-die finish against Jimmy Sawyer from USM, who also ran 50.91. Joel lunged across the line and made the difference. In the same event, cross country veteran Tim Natriello '09 ran his first collegiate indoor track race in 59.43, a great start for him. In the 600m, Sam Thomas won again in 1:24.57 and was backed up by Mike Watson's 3rd place finish in 1:26.52.

CJ Murray had arguably the best double of his life - running 2:01 in the open 800, finishing 3rd and then coming back with a 1:59 anchor split in the relay. Biggart was 3rd in the mile, running a seasonal best of 4:28. Now, moving on the the 3k and to Stompy again. Stompy not only ran 9:12 and won the 3k, but actually outsprinted a runner from Rhode Island College, who finished a mere second behind Sir William. Sauce finished 6th in 9:43 and Big T was 8th in 10:08. T-Unit made his reentry into the Bates racing scene with a 3rd place finish in the 5k in 18:06.

In the 55m Hurdles, Macbeth was 2nd with a time of 7.99, and although he was not satisfied with that race, he came back and won the Long Jump in an 8 man field with a leap of 21-07.00, a seasonal PR for Macbeth. Bates had no entry in the 4 x 200m Relay, but won the 4 x 400 in 3:30. The 4 x 800m was very exciting with Biggart leading off in 2:14 followed by John Miley running a lifetime best of 2:00, then Watson with a 2:03, and finally CJ with his 1:59 after a 2:01 open 800. They're total time was 8:16, and second place Rhode Island College was 29 seconds back in 8:45.

Mike Canova '08 came back in his first meet since the Bates Decathlon in December due to a stress fracture injury. Canova was 3rd in the high jump, jumping 6-00, and almost clearing 6-02, which would have equaled his PR. Not bad for the first real meet of the season. Tibbets also jumped 6-00, matching his PR from last week at Tufts. Tibbets came back in the Pole Vault with a final height of 10-00 and right behind him was Jack Murphy making his debut in the vault with a height of 9-00. Drabo won the Triple Jump in 44-04, improving his seasonal PR by almost a full foot.

Noah Gauthier shined again (sorry Noah, you did great, but it is damn nice to see Stompy get that honor baton this week). He threw 57-03.00 in the 35lb weight throw, winning the event and setting a new PR. He also won the shot put in 47-05.50. Even if we didn't have Noah on the team, we would have a strong and winning thrower in Matt Lopez who was second to Noah in the shot, throwing a PR of 39-04.50 and finishing 3rd in the weight throw with a toss of 48-09.50. Graham Raymond '08 also threw a PR in the weight with a toss of 38-11.50.

Overall it was another great day for the Bobcats, who traveled to the meet in the honorable presence of newly appointed President Jack (see News below). President Jack made all executive decisions and was not forced to throw anyone out of the meet or veto any officials' decisions. Maybe next week....

The Bates Men will return to USM again next week for the highly anticipated State Meet. Bowdoin beat the Bobcats in cross country, so we will be looking to defend our title for Indoor Track. Full results of today's meet can be found here.

Also, make sure to check out the Roster page every week as each member of the team has a page with an updated performance list from each meet.

After all the ballots were counted on the computer from Tuesday's and Wednesday's voting period, Team Manager Bill Jack '08 beat Vaibhav Bajpai '07 to win the presidency.

The election seemed to be fairly close, but most people indicated that they would vote for Bill not only because is he the nicest guy you'll ever meet, but also because his posters were everywhere on campus, and they were hilarious! Go Bill... I mean, Mr. President!

Tufts Invitational

"Today we got a great glimpse of the potential that this team has," said Coach Fresh tonight as we pulled into the Merrill driveway back at Bates. The Bobcats finished second at the Tufts Invitational - a meet consisting of 14 teams. The host Jumbos won the meet with 146.50 points while Bates trailed 4.5 points behind with 142. While Tufts had a 78-man team today, Bates competed with 38 - certainly a good indication of our potential. Of the 19 events scored, Bates won 7 - the greatest number of any competing team.

Things started off on a great note with Biggart winning the 5k in 15:27, an 8 second PR for him. One of the big questions among the distance guys this year has been whether or not Biggart would break 15:30 before graduation, and to do it at his first stab at it looks great. Stompy also ran a PR - 17 seconds - of 16:16 in the 5k, which was good enough for a 4th place finish. Dillon "Sauce" ran his first indoor track 5k in 16:42.

Joel Colony had an outstanding day - winning the 200m (23.18) in a 31-man field, finishing 2nd in the 55m dash (6.61) in a 35-man field, and was a crucial member of the winning 4 x 400m relay team - running the fastest split of the group - 49 seconds. Fellow captain Macbeth, in addition to being a part of the winning 4 x 400 team, won the 55m hurdles in 7.91 seconds - the 2nd place finisher ran 8.10. John Miley was 4th in the 400m with a time of 53.08. Sam Thomas capped off the sprint events by winning the 500m in a 19-man field with a time of 1:06.81. Sam took the lead with 2 laps to go and never relinquished it.

In the 800m, Watson placed 7th with a time of 2:03 - a 3 second improvement on his performance at Coast Guard last week -, which was good enough to score points. Watson later came back in the DMR and ran a 2:02 800 leg. His roommate CJ made a statement in a stacked mile - finishing 8th overall from the 2nd heat with a time of 4:32, a 1 second improvement from last weekend. Matt Lacey of Tufts won the event in 4:21 in the first heat, and although he got off to a slow start with a 70 second first quarter, his middle 800 was 2:07. Not a bad field at all. Will Viti was highly competitive again in the 1000m, running 2:52.

The field events were no exception to the great performances today. Both Miley and Tibbetts attained new PRs in the high jump - both jumped 6 feet. Noah Gauthier won both the shot put and the weight throw with a toss of 54-11.50 feet in the latter - good enough to qualify provisionally for Nationals and good enough to earn him the Bates Honor Baton. Drabo came in 2nd in the triple jump with a leap of 46-00.75 feet. It all came down to the final jump for Drabo who, after 2 jumps, was in 3rd behind two Tufts jumpers. His final jump was good enough to make the difference. Freshman Jerome Bennett finished 3rd in the pole vault and actually vaulted over 13 feet, but the measurements were recorded inaccurately so he could not make any qualifying provisions.

Bates will travel to Southern Maine next weekend for the Huskie's Invitational. Full results from today's meet can be found here.

Bates, MIT, Coast Guard

Bates was second at Saturday's tri meet between the Bobcats, MIT, and Coast Guard, hosted by Coast Guard. MIT won with 159.50 points, followed by Bates (98.50), and closely behind by Coast Guard (96). John Miley '08 earned the coveted Honor Baton, given by the Bates coaches to an outstanding athlete each meet. John was 3rd in the high jump with a PR of 5'11.50, 7th in the pole vault with a jump of 10'6'', 9th in the shot put (39'01.25), and ran the fastest leg (2:04) on the 3rd place 4 x 800m relay team. It will be exciting to watch John throughout the season as he continues to be a reliable top performer for Bates.

Captain Adam Macbeth '05 had an outstanding day as well, placing first in a competitive long jump field (19'-08.25), and winning the 55m hurdles in 7.94, the fastest mark with which he has ever opened a season. Fellow senior Matt Biggart showed the field what Bates distance is all about by running a 4:32 mile in a very competitive field on a 180m track, and backing that up with a 4th place 9:11 3000m, the second best time he has ever run for the event. Joining Biggart in the mile was freshman middle distance standout CJ Murray who placed 5th, right behind Biggart in 4:33. Stompy '05, Sauce '09, and Big T '08 all ran in the 3k as well, running 9:39, 9:58, and 10:22 respectively. Freshman Mike Watson finished 4th in the open 800, running 2:06 - a great time for such a tight-turned track.

As usual, Noah Gauthier '08 threw great - throwing 53-11.00 in the weight throw, second only to MIT's All American, Uzoma Orji. Matt Lopez '08 was right behind Noah in 3rd place with a toss of 46-05.25.

Will Viti '08 ran a PR in the 1000, even with an injured toe, finishing in 2:51. Sam Murphy '07, fresh back from a semester abroad in Australia, opened his season with a 3rd place finish in the 600 with a time of 1:27.37.

Bates had great success in the 400. The open 400 featured Sam Thomas winning in 52.70, and Captain Joel Colony finishing 2nd in 52.79. Bates also won the 4 x 400m relay in 3:33.10, 4 seconds in front of Coast Guard. The team consisted of Matt Capone '07, Macbeth, Sam Thomas, and Joel.

To end things, lets talk about Emmanuel Drabo '08. Drabo won the triple jump with a 3 foot margin, leaping 43-07.00 feet. He was 2nd in the long jump behind Macbeth by 6 inches with a jump of 19-02.75. Drabo also ran the 200 with a time of 25.18.

Overall, it was a good day for the Bobcats. The goal was to win, but we knew that MIT would bring a strong team. We also knew that Coast Guard would bring with them large numbers and also have the advantage of being on their home track. As it turned out, Bates and Coast Guard scored essentially the same - indicative of a very competitive meet.

Next week Bates will travel to Boston to compete at the Tufts Invitational, a co-ed meet. For photos of the meet taken by alumni Tom Leonard, click here. For full race results, click here.

 Dartmouth Relays

Last Sunday at Dartmouth College, sophomores Noah Gauthier and Matt Lopez both scored in the 35-lb weight throw, and Noah qualified provisionally for Nationals, the first Bates athlete of the season to do so. In a completive field consisting of both unattached throwers and collegiate level athletes, Noah was 6th overall and 2nd in the college rankings, and Lopez was 10th overall and 5th in the college rankings. Noah threw a PR of 54-00.50 feet, beating his previous best by 6 feet 4 inches. Lopez threw 46-04.25 feet and improved upon his 45 feet 8 inch previous best.

Noah and Lopez were the only Bates athletes to compete last weekend, yet Bates scored 11th out of 14 teams with 10 points, which included NESCAC rivals Williams (82 points, 2nd), Tufts (20 points, 7th), and Middlebury (5 points, 14th). Dartmouth won the meet with 114 points.

The rest of the Bates squad is currently competing in New London, CT at the annual Bates-MIT-Coast Guard tri-meet. Coast Guard's track is 180 meters, so although the times might not be particularly significant, the competition will undoubtedly be outstanding and a full story will be posted on Monday.

Bates Decathlon

We're sorry for the lack of updating in a while, but with a solid month of last minute work and finals it can be tough. Although that defeats the purpose of why this site was created - because Bates' is awful and is never updated. Never again will Bates post information before The Official Webpage!

Anyway....On Saturday, December 3 three Bates athletes got a jump start on the season. John Miley '08, Andrew Tibbetts '07, and Mike Canova '08 were the three lone competitors at the Bates Pentathlon. John won with a score of 3,243 points, a 39 point improvement on his PR and the second best mark in Bates history. Tibbetts earned 2,881 points and Canova was third with 2,786 points. All three earned their way onto Bates' Top 10 list and to the New England Division III Championship meet later in the season.

The 55m hurdles was the first event with Tibbetts finishing first in 8.85 seconds, followed by John (8.86), and Canova (9.45). The Long Jump followed with John taking this event with a jump of 6.00m, then Tibbetts (5.71m), and Canova (5.69m). Now, at this point Canova started to get a little upset that he could do no better than third so he took the initiative and came in second in the next event, the Shot Put. All the lifting this summer was finally worth it. John won with a toss of 11.86m, then Canova with 10.06m, and Tibbetts in third with 9.21m. Canova, feeling the sweet taste of victory from the Shot decided he'd win the next event, the High Jump - his specialty. Canova was first with a jump of 1.83m, followed by Miley (1.8m) and Tibbetts (1.77m). The final event was the 1000m run, which Miley won in 2:47 - a very respectable time. Tibbetts, banking off his cross country expereince, was second in 2:58. Finally, Canova brought it home in 3:05.

So, all in all, a successful first meet. Imagine how these guys will be with actual competition. Oooooooooooooh.
