Who We Are

The Bates College JCC, an entirely student run organization open to all Batesies, offers religious and cultural opportunities to the members of the Bates community and provides a support network to the Bates Jewish Community.

Some of our more popular activities include our weekly Shabbat dinners, our Erev Rosh Hashannah Dinner, our Yom Kippur break-fast, our Sukkot celebration including the Sukkah construction and sleep out, our Channukah Party, our Tu B'Shevat celebration, the Purim Party, our Passover Seder, and Yom Hashoah speakers/service. We provide transportation to regional synagogues for all major Jewish Holidays, as well as hold a number of services of our own over the course of the year.

The JCC sponsors speakers about Judaism as a religion and a culture in efforts to inform the campus at large while working closely with the Chaplain's Office. We also provide educational materials available for general campus use.

The JCC also participates in religious and cultural activities with multifaith/multicultural groups on campus, other college Jewish organizations, and area synagogues. Our faculty advisor is Steve Hochstadt, professor of history.
