About Bates Hillel
The Bates Hillel, an entirely student run organization open to all Bates College students, seeks to offer religious and cultural opportunities, as well as a system of support to the members of the Bates Jewish community. At the same time, this club seeks to create and strengthen ties between the population of Jewish students at Bates and those in the L/A area as well as around the world. Bates Hillel also strives to foster strong relationships with other religious and cultural groups that exist on campus.
Hillel provides Friday night religious services for Shabbat every week, which are held in either the Frye Street Union or the multicultural center with a dinner catered by commons being provided afterwards. This club also traditionally leads religious events for Sukkot, Hanukkah, Tu BiShvat, Purim, and Passover, and Yom Hashanah.
Hillel also conducts services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This year, a rabbinical student is being brought to campus to lead services which were much more convenient and accessible for members of the Bates community.
Hillel also sponsors speakers about Judaism as a religion and a culture in efforts to inform the campus at large about important issues. Numerous other events which are more cultural are held each year, such as apple picking, movie showings, and comedians. Hillel works with chaplain Bill Blaine-Wallace and local Rabbi Hillel Katzir to provide educational materials available for general campus use.
