The
academic year 2002/03 started out with ambitious plans to organize a
number of activities: movie series, speakers, trips, parties, etc. Of
these, we managed to conduct two movie showings at the Olin Arts Center
and two informal parties at the TAs' house on Bardwell Street. We never
applied for a budget through the Dean of Faculty's Office or the EARL
committee/RA, which made anything more cost-intensive quite impossible.
However, there is a possibility of receiving funds from either source,
if budget is submitted, and there is virtually no limit to the scope
of events to be held.
Traditionally,
movie series are a popular choice of activity to attract people within
or without the German milieu. They can be organized thematically or
by following market trends (i.e. in an attempt to lure non-Germanists
by means of a best-selling picture).
The
other events are also open to improvisation. An unexplored area is collaboration
with similarly minded people at other Maine colleges and universities,
especially Colby and Bowdoin. Maybe certain events can be co-sponsored
and co-attended by members from all three institutions. There is also
a Goethe-Institut in Boston with a lively program of speakers, films,
concerts, etc.; this can be pursued to the advantage of the Club. Again,
any project that involves significant expenditure is only going to be
possible if funds are available.
Campus-wide
parties with a German theme used to be popular during the existence
of earlier clubs. Food and beverages served at these were a particular
draw. However, this was before the Bates-wide crackdown on alcohol,
and it is not clear how possible it would be to organize a legal, culturally
significant bash to everyone's taste. All these questions can be answered
by the Student Activities Office.
