So what exactly is BEAA?

BEAA stands for the Bates Eating Awareness Association.

Our Mission

To dispel the myths and silence that surround the issues of disordered
eating. We believe that both the recovery and prevention of eating disorders are possible. In order to work toward these goals, we shall promote the discussion and education on the following issues: eating disorders, disordered eating, self- esteem and body image.

Bates Eating Awareness is the group that focuses on Campus- wide prevention, education and awareness. They sponsor campus wide initiatives to promote healthy body image, self- esteem and stress reduction as well as education about disordered eating. This groups works on a project-by-project basis and allows for more flexibility in scheduling.

Location

The BEAA Center is located in room 5 of 45 Campus Ave. (Student Wellness Center). We meet mondays at 8pm.

BEAA is not a support group, however, we are able to put you in contact with the appropriate resources if you or someone you know needs help.

Think you have an eating disorder?

Have compassion for yourself. You have this problem for some good reasons that you may not yet understand. Be honest with yourself. Eating disorders have a way of distorting your thinking and hiding what you really feel.

Get help! The sooner you confront your problem and work to find better ways of coping the quicker you will make changes that will help you feel better. Find the person you trust the most, or the person you feel most comfortable talking to; friend, family member, counselor, minister, etc. to listen and begin supporting you toward the healing and understanding you seek. Most people find talking with a professional person who has had experience and understands eating disorders the most helpful. Know that you are much, much more than your eating disorder and that you deserve all the support and help you want to find a better life.

Be patient! It can take time to change. Eating disorders can have a tenacious grip. Keep faith in yourself and know that any change, no matter how small, takes courage.
